Merit Awards

The University of Maine at Presque Isle understands that earning a degree is a very valuable endeavor, but it is not inexpensive. We are committed to offering you opportunities to offset the costs through our Student Academic Scholarship Program. You will be rewarded for your hard work in academic areas. The awards below are geared toward traditional students coming right out of high school, and students transferring from out-of-state colleges and universities. These scholarships are awarded at the time of acceptance.

In-State Merit Awards

$4000 Merit Award (John Hill Blue)
Students must:
1) Score 1100+ on the SAT between Critical Reading & Math (24 ACT)
2) Be in the top 25% of class rank with a high school GPA of 3.0.

$2000 Merit Award (John Hill Gold)
Students must:
1) Score 900+ on the SAT between Critical Reading & Math (19 ACT)
2) Be in the top 50% of class rank or have a high school GPA of 2.75.

$1000 Merit Award (John Hill Bronze)
Students must:
1) Score 800+ on the SAT between Critical Reading & Math (16 ACT)
2) Be in the top 50% of class rank.

Out-of-State Merit Awards

$5000 Merit Award (EDGE Blue)
Students must:
1) Score 1100+ on the SAT between Critical Reading & Math (24 ACT)
2) Be in the top 25% of class rank with a high school GPA of 3.0.

$2500 Merit Award (EDGE Gold)
Students must:
1) Score 900+ on the SAT between Critical Reading & Math (19 ACT)
2) Be in the top 50% of class rank or have a high school GPA of 2.75.

Canadian Merit Awards

These awards are for students who have not earned an undergraduate degree.
$5000 to students with a Canadian academic average of 80 or above.
$2500 to students with a Canadian academic average of between 70-80.

Out-of-State Transfer Merit Awards

$5000 to students with a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher.
$2500 to students with a cumulative GPA of 2.75 - 3.24.

International Merit Awards

$5000 Merit Award (International EDGE Blue Award)
Students must score 1100+ on the SAT between Critical Reading & Math (24 ACT)

$2500 Merit Award (International EDGE Gold Award)
Students must score 900+ on the SAT between Critical Reading & Math (19 ACT)


General Eligibility Guidelines

  • The student must have a completed admission file and the student must be accepted into a degree program.
  • The student must be currently enrolled in an accredited high school or state/provincial approved home schooled program.  The EDGE Transfer awards are exempt from this requirement.
  • The student must take a minimum of 12 credits per semester which are delivered by the University of Maine at Presque Isle. Courses offered online by another institution are not considered credits for the purposes of this requirement.
  • The student must maintain satisfactory academic progress in his/her chosen major, successfully complete a minimum of 12 credit hours (delivered by the University of Maine at Presque Isle) per semester and maintain the specific GPA requirement of the award that they receive.  A student who loses eligibility due to academic performance or failure to complete the semester will no longer be eligible for the scholarship.
  • The student will be eligible to renew the award for an additional seven continuous semesters for a total of eight semesters.  EDGE Transfer scholarship recipients have individual renewal eligibility limits.
  • Students who are eligible for the University of Maine System Waiver Programs, as well as the New England Board of Higher Education Tuition Break Program (NEBHE) are not eligible to receive these scholarships.
  • Student Academic Scholarships are traditional fall and spring term awards and cannot be used for summer terms.
