Many disciplines–including business, economics, the life sciences, medicine, the physical sciences, and engineering–have much greater mathematical content now than they did a generation ago, and the need for mathematically literate professionals and entrepreneurs continues to grow. Our Mathematics program is designed to maximize students’ abilities to construct, solve, and interpret mathematical models of problems that arise naturally in these fields, and to communicate mathematical ideas effectively. We place a special emphasis on preparing and supporting teachers who will impart these skills to future generations, on supporting our computer science and cybersecurity programs, and on actuarial science. Aa major in mathematics is excellent preparation for a wide variety of future endeavors.

Why Math?

As the study of patterns, both concrete and abstract, mathematics calls for critical thinking, logical reasoning, problem-solving abilities, and clear communication. It is precisely these kinds of analytical and logical thinking abilities that one acquires when studying mathematics that employers seek in candidates. Growth is anticipated in occupations that require these skills as long as companies and governmental organizations prioritize using “big data” which math professionals are uniquely qualified to evaluate.

Double up

A double major means pursuing two degrees at the same time. Unlike pursuing a minor (which involves completing approximately 18 credit hours), pursuing the double major involves completing all the required classes and credits you would need to earn the full degree. Mathematics is the perfect complement to many degree programs. Some popular double major combinations with mathematics include:

  • Mathematics & Computer Science
  • Mathematics & Business
  • Mathematics & Biology
  • Mathematics & Cybersecurity

Unique UMPI Benefits

At UMPI, you can expect to work with faculty who know your name, provide inspiration with every learning experience, and prepare you to be career-ready. You won’t just be learning about mathematical concepts, you’ll be applying them to real-life situations, incorporating technology, and communicating your ideas.

Love Math?

We work hard to match up your particular mathematical interests and passions with your coursework. We tackle a variety of Wicked Problems–such as climate change, overpopulation, and homelessness–using mathematical skills learned in the classroom and work to brainstorm solutions. Join us if you’re interested in using math to solve real-world problems. We also offer opportunities to connect with others who have a passion for mathematics, through experiences like competitions and professional conferences.

Actuarial Science

This minor prepares students for a career as an actuary. Oftentimes, actuarial science is listed as one of the top career choices. Actuaries quantify, evaluate, and manage uncertainty using mathematical tools such as probability, statistics, and calculus fundamentals. Actuaries are employed by banks, insurance companies, investment firms, governments, and other companies that require risk evaluation. Check out our minor!

On the road

In our program, you’ll have the opportunity to share your mathematical skills with the local community, volunteering in nearby public schools and getting hands-on experience working directly with students. If your interest is more theoretical, opportunities are available to attend regional and national mathematics and educational conferences. Faculty are always willing to find new opportunities and field experiences for those who have specific interests and career goals.

Testimonials

My experience with the Mathematics Program at the University of Maine at Presque Isle created a strong mathematical foundation that has transferred to my high school mathematics teacher career. The mathematics program thoroughly prepared me for my graduate studies and professional career. There is a real sense of community and general well-being for everyone going through this program.

— Kyle Gilson, Mathematics Teacher at Caribou High School, Class of 2014

The professors have so much expertise, plus they’re great teachers. They teach the content in layers and make sure we understand the information before we go on. From that, the learning becomes intuitive.

— Ryan Sonderman, Class of 2025
