Maines gives DLS talk on daughter’s transformational journey

The University of Maine at Presque Isle will present Wayne Maines—whose family was featured in the New York Times Best-Selling book Becoming Nicole: The Transformation of an American Family by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Amy Ellis Nutt—as the next speaker in its 2016-2017 Distinguished Lecturer Series. Maines will chronicle the journey that could have destroyed his family but instead brought them closer together. He will deliver his talk on Tuesday, Oct. 25, at 7 p.m. in the Campus Center. The event is free and the public is invited to attend.

Central Aroostook Rotary clubs, UMPI present 5th Annual World Polio Day

The University of Maine at Presque Isle and the Presque Isle Rotary Club are joining forces to host their Fifth Annual World Polio Day and Purple Pinkie Project celebration between Oct. 22 and 29 and this year, with the help of the Rotary Clubs in Caribou, Fort Fairfield, Limestone, Mars Hill and Washburn, the celebration will once again spread throughout central Aroostook County.

UMPI hosts Science Lunchtime Seminar Series

Two academic programs at the University of Maine at Presque Isle are again joining forces this fall to provide the campus and community with an innovative way to explore the world of science. The Environmental Science and Sustainability and the Biology programs are hosting a lunchtime seminar series that will provide a forum to present scientific research conducted by UMPI students and faculty, and local and regional scientists, as well as topics in management, medicine and applied science.

UMPI announces Alumni award recipients

The University of Maine at Presque Isle and the Alumni Association have honored three alumni with awards of distinction this fall—the Distinguished Alumni Award and Distinguished Educator Award were presented on Saturday, Oct. 1 during the Inaugural UMPI Alumni Hour, held during Homecoming Weekend, and the newly-minted GOLD Award (Graduate Of the Last Decade) was presented in mid-September during the University’s Convocation activities.

UMPI, Wintergreen declare Color PI 5K 2016 a success

After partnering to co-present the Fourth annual Color Presque Isle 5K, officials with the University of Maine at Presque Isle and the Wintergreen Arts Center are calling the event a huge success. During this year’s Color PI 5K, where participants dressed in white and were showered with colored powder throughout the course, more than 300 people took to the course and nearly $12,000 was raised for local arts programming activities.

Life and times of Henry VIII revisited as UMPI students “react” to the past

This semester, University of Maine at Presque Isle students in the History class HTY 313: Early Modern Europe are taking on the roles of historical figures and reliving major events from the past—in this case, Henry VIII and the Reformation Parliament in the 16th Century, when marital discontent, an heir to the Tudor line, and religion all took center stage—as part of a curriculum that has been used all across the United States and abroad.

Poet brings Spoken Word to UMPI

College National Poetry Slam Champion Neil Hilborn will deliver a powerful spoken word performance at the University of Maine at Presque Isle on Thursday, Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. in the Campus Center’s Multi-Purpose Room. This event is free and open to the public and is rated PG-13.

University hosts annual fall blood drive

In conjunction with the American Red Cross, the University of Maine at Presque Isle will hold its annual fall blood drive on Friday, Oct. 21. The drive will run from Noon until 5 p.m. in the Campus Center’s Multi-Purpose Room. Members of the campus and community are invited and encouraged to participate in this free event.

UMPI hosts fall classes geared to working professionals

The University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Employer U program, which focuses on providing workforce development opportunities for the region, will offer three six-week courses this fall beginning Tuesday, Oct. 11, as part of its American Management Association’s University certificate program. Each 20-hour course will be offered in the newly opened MMG Center for Professional Development, located on the first floor of Kelley Commons, adjacent to the Campus Center.
