A national nonprofit called Baseball for All is organizing a national girls baseball tournament to be held this summer in Orlando, Florida, and members of the University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Athletic Department are working to put together a team from Maine.
Momentum Aroostook, MMG Insurance, and the University of Maine at Presque Isle are pleased to announce that nominations are now open for the eighth annual Young Professionals Institute, running this year on Tuesdays from March 3 to April 14. The online nomination/application form is available at www.umpi.edu/ypi. The nomination deadline is Friday, Jan. 30.

The cost of college is on the minds of most seniors in high school and other adults who aspire to a college degree, and the TRiO College Access staff members from the Upward Bound and Educational Talent Search programs at the University of Maine at Presque Isle are hosting several College Goal Month events to help.
The University of Maine at Presque Isle will host Dr. Olaf Jensen, a scientist who has worked since 2007 to study and conserve Mongolia’s unique lake and river ecosystems, for an evening presentation on Thursday, Jan. 29 at 7 p.m. in the Campus Center. Dr. Jensen’s talk, titled The River Wolf and the Blue Pearl: Conservation of Endangered Salmonids in Mongolia, will focus on several of Mongolia’s fish currently at risk, including the Hucho taimen, the largest trout in the world.
The University of Maine at Presque Isle will host its annual spring semester American Red Cross Blood Drive on Tuesday, Jan. 27 from 12 to 5 p.m. in the Campus Center’s Multi-Purpose Room. Door prizes will be given away during this time. Members of the campus and community are invited and encouraged to participate in this free event.
The University of Maine Presque Isle’s Student Organization of Social Workers will host two graduate school informational sessions, featuring graduate school representatives from the University of New England and the University of Maine, from 12:30-1:30 p.m. on Thursdays, Jan. 22 and 29.
A professor who taught at the University of Maine at Presque Isle for more than 40 years has had a 200-page book published by one of the top global academic publishers. Dr. William Davidshofer, UMPI Professor Emeritus of Political Science, had a major work entitled Marxism and the Leninist Revolutionary Model published by Palgrave Macmillan this past September.
University of Maine at Presque Isle alumus Bob Tarpey received a major honor this month for his work as an Athletic Trainer for the Toronto Blue Jays organization. Tarpey was named the 2014 Minor League Athletic Trainer of the Year by the Professional Baseball Athletic Trainers Society (PBATS). He was presented with his national award in early December by PBATS at the annual Baseball Winter Meetings in San Diego.
University of Maine at Presque Isle Trustees Professor Kevin McCartney recently published two papers in international science journals. Both papers are about the silicoflagellate double skeletons. These are two paired skeletons that were connected prior to the division of the microorganism into two cells. One of the articles was published in the journal Marine Micropaleontology and the other in the Journal of Nannoplankton Research. McCartney is first author on both articles, which include 12 other authors from eight countries in Europe, Asia and Australia.
University of Maine at Presque Isle Biology professor Dr. Rachael Hannah and Aroostook County high school teachers are working together to hold the 1st Northern Maine Regional Brain Bee on Dec. 12, 2014, on the UMPI campus. The event is being held in conjunction with faculty from the University of Maine at Machias and the University of New England as they will be holding the Eastern Maine Regional Brain Bee and the Southern Maine Regional Brain Bee, respectively, on their campuses on the same day.
