UMPI hosts management courses for the fall semester

The University of Maine at Presque Isle will be offering two courses this fall beginning Tuesday, Sept. 24, and Wednesday, Sept. 25, respectively, as part of its American Management Association’s certificate programs. The course registration deadline is Thursday, Sept. 19.

These fall courses, part of a multi-course curriculum leading to Certificates in Management and Human Resources Management, are specifically created to meet the unique needs of working professionals who want to be more effective in their current positions and better prepared for future advancement, according to Keith Madore, campus AMA coordinator.

By meeting in a classroom setting with other managers from many different organizations, students are able to see how other companies handle problems similar to their own. Instructors with extensive business experience and excellent teaching skills facilitate the courses.

The course Communication Skills for Managers will be held on Tuesdays from Sept. 24 to Oct. 29, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in the Campus Center, Alumni Room. The course will provide a solid overview of all facets of business communication—including written, spoken, in person and via email—and will offer numerous opportunities to practice and apply skills and track improvement. Kim Jones, Marketing Coordinator at Cary Medical Center, will lead the course.

First-Level Leadership is scheduled for Wednesdays from Sept. 25 through Oct. 30, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in the Campus Center, Alumni Room. The course, specially developed for first-level supervisors, will focus on how to motivate and retain employees, lead with impact and influence, manage project and virtual teams, lead for competitive advantage, and craft and implement a plan for managing change. Timothy McMahon, retired manager, will lead the course.

To earn an AMA certificate, each student is required to complete six courses for Management or five for Human Resources Management. Courses may be taken in any order and there is no time limit for completion of the program. Courses also can be offered on-site, Madore said.

Each course meets once a week for six weeks and one or more courses may be taken per term. The cost is $250 per course, and includes instruction, text and materials. Continuing Education Units are available for an additional charge. For more information or to register, contact Keith Madore at 768-9568 or keith.madore@maine.edu.
