Dear Students,
We hope this message finds you well. I want to acknowledge the uncertainty and concern that many of you may be feeling in light of recent changes to federal policy and immigration enforcement in particular. These times can bring stress and discomfort, and I want to provide reassurance that we are here to support you. As a public institution, we are committed to following state and federal laws–and we are equally committed to protecting your personal information and your right to privacy.
Here’s what you should know:
- FERPA: The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) protects the privacy of your educational records, including information about your citizenship or immigration status. Your personal information will not be shared without your consent, except in certain situations. You can limit the sharing of your directory information by marking the FERPA indicator in your MaineStreet account. For more information, please visit FERPA Guidance.
- Campus Access: The university is open to the public, but certain areas like residence halls, classrooms, and research labs are restricted for authorized individuals. Law enforcement, including immigration agencies, must follow privacy laws and generally cannot access restricted spaces without a warrant or authorized personnel.
- Law Enforcement Requests: If ICE, CBP, or other law enforcement agencies seek access to campus or request information about students or employees, staff and faculty will refer them to the appropriate contacts:
- Chief Joey Seeley (Director of Safety and Security): 207-768-9580
- If Chief Seeley is unavailable, contact the UMS Office of General Counsel: 207-581-5841
- For phone or electronic requests, refer to Lisa Smith (Registrar): 207-768-9629
- Student Actions: If you are approached by immigration officials, contact Chief Seeley immediately at 207-768-9580, or the UMS Office of General Counsel at 207-581-5841 if Chief Seeley is unavailable.
- Additional Resources: For concerns regarding immigration, students may contact the National Immigrant Justice Center or UMPI Student Support Services at 207-768-9613 for assistance. The University of Maine System also maintains a Federal Transition Information page, which tracks relevant policy changes.
