The University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Reed Art Gallery will present Mutated Growth by Brunswick artist Jackie Brown from Wednesday, Oct. 14 through Friday, Nov. 20, 2015. The public is invited to view the exhibition throughout the show’s run and attend the Gallery Reception on Friday, Nov. 6 from 5-7 p.m., which is being held in conjunction with the First Friday Art Walk. Brown will conduct an Artist Talk during the reception at 5:30 p.m.

Jackie Brown is a sculpture installation artist who relocated to Maine to teach at Bowdoin College in 2014. She has been featured in exhibitions across the United States in places such as New York, Pennsylvania, California, Michigan, and Virginia as well as internationally in Australia. She has received numerous awards, including the Wind Challenge Finalist at the Fleisher Art Memorial in Philadelphia and completed an Artist Residency at the Museum of Art and Design in New York, New York.

The show, Mutated Growth, is an immersive exhibition experience into imagined biological systems: “An important undercurrent in the work is an interest in the human manipulation of living systems, particularly advances in bioengineering that are fraught with both exciting and frightening implications,” Brown said. “While each work is imaginative, the ideas that are central to the work reference real phenomenon and I hope to encourage viewers to consider the shifting nature of the world around them.”

“Mutated Growth is a colorful investigation of our own biology,” Reed Gallery Director Heather Sincavage said. “This is an exhibition that is truly an experience that pictures can’t describe. It’s an exciting way to break in our brand new space and taps into the scientifically minded audience. We hope to see new faces in the gallery during this exhibition!”

The public is encouraged to come out to First Friday on Nov. 6 and attend this free event. Light refreshments will be served. Please follow gallery happenings on the Reed Gallery Facebook page, www.facebook.com/ReedArtGallery.
