UMPI hosts Titan Challenge high school competition

The University of Maine at Presque Isle welcomes area high school students to campus today, Wednesday, Feb. 13, for the Junior Achievement of Maine–Titan Challenge event, which allows participants to compete against their peers across the state on business finance and marketing exercises. This is UMPI’s second year hosting the event, which is being held in the Campus Center.

“We’re so excited to be hosting the Junior Achievement of Maine–Titan Challenge again this year,” Carolyn Dorsey, UMPI Assistant Professor of Business Management, said. “This is a wonderful opportunity to help students prepare for future careers in business-related fields and to get exposure not only to a college setting but also to some major business leaders in the state.”

UMPI receives nearly $92,000 Maine Economic Improvement Fund grant

A team of professors at the University of Maine at Presque Isle has been awarded a $91,875 Maine Economic Improvement Fund Small Campus Initiative grant from the University of Maine System that will allow them to focus efforts on preparing students for emerging trends and careers in the biomedical research and healthcare industries.

The overarching goal of the project, titled Developing Maine’s Future Biomedical Work Force, is to increase the supply of qualified graduates for biotechnology sector employment in the state of Maine. The UMPI team leading this effort includes Dr. Scott Dobrin, Dr. Rachael Hannah, and Dr. Judith Roe, all Assistant Professors of Biology; and Dr. Linda Graves, Co-Director of the Medical Laboratory Technology [MLT] Program of Maine.

Bachelor of Social Work scholarship to be established at UMPI

Through the dedicated efforts and donations of the University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Student Organization of Social Workers [SOSW], UMPI faculty and friends, and a generous anonymous donor, the Foundation of the University at Presque Isle is establishing a new scholarship meant to provide financial assistance for students pursuing a degree in the field of social work.

Members of the Social Work Program, SOSW, and campus community members will be on hand at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 7 in Room 118 of the Campus Center for the official signing of the trust agreement establishing the new Bachelor of Social Work scholarship.

UMPI President to give talk on the portrayal of love in art

Ahead of Valentine’s Day, the University of Maine at Presque Isle will host a special presentation about love and the way it has been portrayed in art from medieval to modern times as part of its Seniors Achieving Greater Education [SAGE] programming.

UMPI President Linda Schott will present the talk, What’s Love Got to Do with It?: The Art (and Science) of Love on Monday, Feb. 11, at 2 p.m. in the Campus Center’s Allagash Room. This talk is free and open to the public.

Planet Head Day to raise funds for C-A-N-C-E-R

What do space science education and cancer awareness have in common? A lot when you’re talking about one of the region’s most unique fundraisers, Planet Head Day, where participants raise money for a local cancer organization by agreeing to have their heads shaved and painted as planets, dwarf planets, moons, comets and asteroids. Aroostook County’s 7th annual Planet Head Day takes place on Saturday, Feb. 16, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Wieden Gymnasium. This not-to-be-missed event is free and the public is invited to attend.

UMPI’s Distinguished Lecturer Series presents Starcia Ague, champion for at-risk youth

The next speaker in the University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Distinguished Lecturer Series understands how hard it can be to finish a college degree, especially when you’re a juvenile behind bars. Starcia Ague found herself in that very situation as a teenager and was able to use her life experiences as inspiration not only to complete her degree, but to devote her career to advocating for at-risk and incarcerated youth.

Ague will talk about her life and work when she serves as the University’s first Distinguished Lecturer for the Spring 2013 semester. She will deliver her talk, From Strife to Triumph: A Champion for At-Risk and Delinquent Youth, at 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 4, in the Campus Center. The public is invited to attend this free event as well as a reception taking place at 6 p.m. prior to Ague’s talk; refreshments will be served.

McCartney makes new discoveries during Poland sabbatical

University of Maine at Presque Isle Professor of Geology Kevin McCartney recently returned from a very fruitful research sabbatical in Poland. The sabbatical was to continue his longstanding research on microscopic fossil algae and resulted in the discovery of one new genus and four new species, a new understanding of silicoflagellate double skeletons, and should produce several publications in international science journals.

NMCC and UMPI Business Students Earn NESRHM Scholarships

Business students from the University of Maine at Presque Isle and Northern Maine Community College have been named as scholarship recipients by an affiliate of the world’s largest professional association devoted to human resource management.

Karin Petrin, a senior NMCC student majoring in Business Administration from Presque Isle, and Janelle Horten, a senior UMPI Business Administration Major from Hodgdon, recently received the Deborah Kierstead and Milton Bailey Memorial Scholarship from the Northeast Society for Human Resource Management (NESHRM).
