Fireworks, African dance troupe slated for UMPI’s Homecoming 2018

The University of Maine at Presque Isle will present Homecoming 2018: Friends and Family Weekend from Thursday to Sunday, Sept. 27-30, featuring entertainment and family-friendly activities. From a show by Kotchegna African dance company to an explosive fireworks display to multiple alumni games for students and the public, all are invited to join the University for its annual Homecoming weekend.

UMPI hosts Zillman for “Living the World War” reading

Former University of Maine at Presque Isle President Donald Zillman will bring the week by week experience of living through World War I to life when he delivers a book reading on Monday, Sept. 24, at 2 p.m. in the UMPI Campus Center. This event is free and open to the public; light refreshments will be served and books will be available for purchase.

UMPI receives three top rankings from U.S. News

Officials at the University of Maine at Presque Isle are pleased to announce that the institution earned three top rankings on U.S. News and World Report’s 2019 Best Colleges list. In this year’s annual rankings, UMPI was named among the 35 Best Regional Colleges in the North, the 15 Top Public Schools in the North, and the top 10 Regional Colleges in the North for graduates with least debt.

UMPI hosts ‘Serving Those Who Served’ workshop

In an effort to best serve veterans’ needs and develop solutions that help them tap their potential, the University of Maine at Presque Isle will host Serving Those Who Served: A Workshop About Helping Our Veterans and Our Communities on Friday, Sept. 21 from 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Campus Center.

UMPI celebrates Constitution Day with slate of activities

The University of Maine at Presque Isle will celebrate the 231st birthday of the signing of the U.S. Constitution by hosting a slate of activities between Monday, Sept. 17 and Monday, Sept. 24. This year’s Constitution Day events will include an observance at UMPI’s Democracy Wall and culminate with a book reading by former UMPI President Donald Zillman.

UMPI announces alumni awardees

The University of Maine at Presque Isle and the Alumni Association will honor three alumni with awards of distinction during Homecoming 2018 activities held Sept. 27-30. The annual alumni award presentations will be made during the third annual UMPI Alumni Hour, which will take place on Saturday, Sept. 29, at 10 a.m. in the Campus Center.

UMPI to host Maine documentary filmmaker Sept. 20

When it comes to celebrating family history, filmmaker Tonya Shevenell and her father Ray Shevenell are willing to go the distance. The two will speak about their journey to film and walk nearly 200 miles to retrace the path of one of their ancestors when the University of Maine at Presque Isle hosts a film screening of The Home Road on Thursday, Sept. 20 at 7 p.m. in the Campus Center. All are invited to attend this free event.

Maine Arts Commission grant helps students explore maps

From map art to altered globes, students in Pam Crawford’s Personal Geographies class explored all sorts of terrain thanks to a grant the University of Maine at Presque Isle received from the Maine Arts Commission as part of the commission’s Creative Aging Program. Final projects from the class are on display in UMPI’s Center for Innovative Learning through Sept. 14.

UMPI presents Salmagundi Film Series

To complement its Distinguished Lecturer Series and other cultural events it hosts during the school year, the University of Maine at Presque Isle has established the Salmagundi Film Series, with a screening and conversation about the film to take place every second Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m. in the Auditorium in Wieden Hall. Film series dates for the Fall 2018 semester are Sept. 11, Oct. 9, Nov. 13, and Dec. 11. All are invited to attend these free screenings, though films may not be appropriate for younger viewers.
