UMPI Art Club presents 12×12 Charity Auction April 6

The University of Maine at Presque Isle Art Club, Studio 923, is bringing back the 12×12 auction, featuring nearly 50 original works on 12-inch by 12-inch canvases just in time for the First Friday Art Walk on April 6. Proceeds from the auction will benefit the Art Club as well as the artists, who will receive a commission from their work unless they choose to donate 100% of the sale price. This event is open to the public and all are invited to attend.

UMPI receives Gold Star recognition by Breathe Easy Coalition of Maine

The University of Maine at Presque Isle was recently recognized by the Maine Tobacco-Free College Network at the Breathe Easy Coalition of Maine with a Gold Award as part of its 2018 Gold Star Standards of Excellence recognition program. The program recognizes Maine institutions of higher education for their work to create and support tobacco-free environments and lifestyles. This is the fifth time the University has received a Gold Award.

UMPI, Northern Lighthouse sign area’s first Campus to Career agreement

In an effort to better meet the region’s workforce development needs, officials with the University of Maine at Presque Isle and The Northern Lighthouse Inc. will sign the area’s first local agreement meant to strengthen the collaborative efforts of both organizations in preparing students—or potential future employees—for careers in the workforce.

6th Annual Purple Pinkie Project a success

With the help of Rotary Clubs throughout central Aroostook, the University of Maine at Presque Isle and the Presque Isle Rotary Club have declared their 6th annual Purple Pinkie Project a success. This year’s event—which was three months in the making and spread throughout northern Maine and into Canada—raised more than $3,000 to go toward Rotary International’s efforts to eradicate polio worldwide.

Tim Doak, UMPI alum and Superintendent of the Year, reflects on education

University of Maine at Presque Isle alumnus Tim Doak considers himself a pretty lucky guy. The Superintendent of RSU 39 and MSAD 20 was able to get his education close to home, have a long and rewarding local career in education, and, as of January, be just the third superintendent from northern Maine recognized as the Maine State Superintendent of the Year.

Shakespeare LIVE! presents “The Comedy of Errors” April 13

The University of Maine at Presque Isle will host Shakespeare LIVE!, a theater troupe that has performed for more than half a million students since its inception in 1997, for a performance of one of the Bard’s great comedies. The Comedy of Errors will be performed in the Auditorium at Wieden Hall on Friday, April 13 at 7 p.m. One of Shakespeare’s beloved comedies, The Comedy of Errors is best experienced as the playwright intended—live on stage. The public is invited to attend this special, family-friendly event; donations will be accepted at the door to go toward future cultural arts programming.

UMPI presents first person interpreter Jennifer Emerson

The University of Maine at Presque Isle welcomes Jennifer Emerson, a first person interpreter and historian, for an interactive performance and presentation titled Cape Horn Widows: Widows Holding Down the Homefront on Tuesday, April 3, at 7 p.m. in the Campus Center. This event is free and the public is encouraged to attend.

UMPI hosts next Science Lunchtime Seminar Series

Two programs at the University of Maine at Presque Isle will host the next Science Lunchtime Seminar Series this spring to provide more exciting ways for the community to explore the world of science in northern Maine. The Environmental Science and Sustainability and the Biology programs present their 9th semi-annual lunchtime seminar series, providing a forum to present scientific research conducted by UMPI students and faculty, and local and regional scientists, as well as topics in management, medicine and applied science. All are invited to attend.

Reed Art Gallery presents Carolyn Wadman exhibit

The University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Reed Art Gallery will present Artist as Teacher from Paintings and Prints to Puppets by Carolyn Wadman, from April 2 through May 11, 2018. The public is invited to view the exhibition throughout the show’s run and attend the Gallery Reception on Friday, April 6, from 5-7 p.m., which includes a talk with the artist at 5:30 p.m.; light refreshments will be served. This reception is being held in conjunction with the First Friday Art Walk. The Reed Gallery is located on the second floor of the University’s Center for Innovative Learning.
