UMPI welcomes Aroostook Aspirations to campus

A local organization that has dedicated itself to connecting area youth with higher education opportunities in Aroostook County has found a new home with the University of Maine at Presque Isle. Aroostook Aspirations has relocated its headquarters from one end of Main Street in Presque Isle to the other, establishing its offices on the first floor of UMPI’s Normal Hall. UMPI has partnered with Aroostook Aspirations since its establishment in 2011 and the move is an expansion of UMPI’s commitment to the organization.

Rotary clubs, UMPI present 6th Annual Purple Pinkie Project

The University of Maine at Presque Isle and the Presque Isle Rotary Club are joining forces to host their Sixth Annual Purple Pinkie Project on Wednesday, Feb. 7 and, with the help of the Rotary Clubs in Caribou, Fort Fairfield, Limestone, Mars Hill and Washburn, this celebration three months in the making spreads throughout central Aroostook County and—new this year—into Canada. All activities raise awareness of Rotary International’s efforts to eradicate polio worldwide and raise money $1 at a time to go toward that global effort.

Reed Art Gallery presents “Unfolding” exhibit

The University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Reed Art Gallery will present Unfolding, an exhibit focused on objects and memory by Jennifer Leigh Jones, from January 22 through March 16, 2018. The public is invited to view the exhibition throughout the show’s run and attend the Gallery Reception on Friday, February 2, from 5-7 p.m., which includes a talk with the artist at 5:30 p.m.; light refreshments will be served. This reception is being held in conjunction with the First Friday Art Walk. The Reed Gallery is located on the second floor of the University’s Center for Innovative Learning.

UMPI presents diverse entertainer Ben Seidman

UMPI Social Work major helps students in Tanzania

Maine Solar System Model’s Neptune is out of orbit

The planet Neptune—usually located 31 astronomical units (miles) from the Sun as part of the Maine Solar System Model along Route 1 in northern Maine—is officially out of orbit. According to Kevin McCartney, Professor at the University of Maine at Presque Isle and coordinator of the model, “space tugs” transported the planet to Northern Maine Community College (NMCC), on Earth, for maintenance this winter.
