UMPI hosts Science Lunchtime Seminar Series

Looking for an innovative way to explore the world of science? The University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Environmental Science and Sustainability program and Biology program offer up their 7th semi-annual Science Lunchtime Seminar Series this spring and invite campus and community members to take part. The series provides a forum to present scientific research conducted by UMPI students, faculty, and other local and regional scientists, as well as experts in management, medicine, and applied science.

Shakespeare LIVE! performs Midsummer Night’s Dream March 9

The University of Maine at Presque Isle will host Shakespeare LIVE!, a theater troupe that has performed for more than half a million students since its inception in 1997, for a performance of one of the Bard’s great comedies, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, on Thursday, March 9 at 7 p.m., in the Auditorium at Wieden Hall. A Midsummer Night’s Dream is one of Shakespeare’s most beloved and most performed works and is best experienced as the playwright intended–live on stage. The public is invited to attend this special event; donations will be accepted at the door to go toward future cultural arts programming.

SAGE kicks off spring class offerings

A University of Maine at Presque Isle program that serves intellectually curious adults, age 50 and older, and believes in “learning for life” will host its Spring Kick-Off at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 17 in the Campus Center. For 19 years, Seniors Achieving Greater Education [SAGE] has brought short courses in arts, sciences, and specialty areas to the region’s senior community. The Kick-Off event will begin with coffee at 9:30 a.m. with time for attendees, including instructors and SAGE members to socialize.

UMPI DLS/Boone Lecture focuses on “Ethics of Care in the County”

Are area healthcare providers keeping pace with the needs of our culturally diverse region? Medical ethics expert Dr. Kenji Saito, M.D., J.D., and a panel of experts will discuss this issue when the University of Maine at Presque Isle and TAMC offer a joint Distinguished Lecturer Series and Storer W. Boone, M.D. Memorial Lecture presentation titled Ethics of Care in the County on Monday, Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. in UMPI’s Campus Center. This presentation is free and the public is invited to be a part of this special evening.

UMPI exchange student receives NSE Award

The University of Maine at Presque Isle is pleased to announce that Raymond Feliciano Rodríguez, an exchange student who traveled from the Inter American University of Puerto Rico, San German to UMPI in Spring 2016 to study Secondary Education, was recently named the recipient of the Richard R. Bond Community Engagement Award by the National Student Exchange (NSE).

UMPI club hosts Veterans Info Night

Local veterans will get a one-stop opportunity to learn about all the veterans benefits and programs available to them on Tuesday, Feb. 28 at 5:30 p.m. in the University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Campus Center when the members of the newly-organized UMPI Student Veterans Club host a Veterans Information Night. This free event is open to all veterans in Aroostook County.

UMPI, C-A-N-C-E-R present 11th Planet Head Day

This February, the University of Maine at Presque Isle, C-A-N-C-E-R [Caring Area Neighbors for Cancer Education and Recovery], and community members will kick off a new decade of close-shaving, head-painting, fundraising planetary fun when they celebrate the 11th annual Planet Head Day. The region’s most unique fundraiser, which brings together space science education and cancer awareness, will be held on Saturday, Feb. 18, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Wieden Gymnasium. This not-to-be-missed celebration is free and the public is invited to attend.

UMPI Education students to lead CACE workshop

UMPI presents Cotton Club revue during Black History Month

In honor of Black History Month and as a special Valentine’s Day treat, University of Maine at Presque Isle students Lassana and Lossene Dorleh will present an original revue, The Cotton Club: A Journey through the Harlem Renaissance, on Tuesday, Feb. 14, at 7 p.m. at the Auditorium in Wieden Hall. This special evening is free and open to the public, though donations will be accepted at the door.
