Cardboard chairs on display in Center for Innovative Learning

This spring, some not-so-typical chairs were on display in the University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Center for Innovative Learning [CIL]. What set these particular chairs apart from the various stools, computer chairs, and cushioned seats available in the CIL is that these works of art were made from cardboard.

University of Maine at Presque Isle hosts 107th Commencement

One hundred and fifty-four students graduated from the University of Maine at Presque Isle on Saturday, May 14, during the 2016 Commencement Exercises – the University’s 107th Commencement ceremony. President Linda Schott conferred degrees for the 2015-2016 academic year upon 85 students who participated in the ceremony held in Wieden Gymnasium.

President Linda Schott has announced that Nicholas C. Donohue, the President and CEO of the Nellie Mae Education Foundation, will deliver the commencement address during the University of Maine at Presque Isle’s 107th Commencement Ceremony, to be held on Saturday, May 14, 2016. During the event, an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters Degree will be presented to Donohue.

UMPI Art Program hosts Empty Bowls fundraiser

The University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Art Program is bringing back a popular event that spreads hunger awareness through ceramics—the area’s third Empty Bowls fundraiser will take place on Tuesday, May 10 from 6-8 p.m. at the William V. Haskell Community Center (Presque Isle Recreation Center). Organized by UMPI Assistant Professor of Art Hyrum Benson’s Ceramics I, II and III classes, this unique event gives participants the opportunity to purchase unique homemade bowls and enjoy cups of soup, all to benefit a local soup kitchen. All County residents are invited to attend. Doors will open and bowls will officially go on sale at 6 p.m.

UMPI hosts spring management course

The University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Employer U, a program focused on providing workforce development opportunities for the region, will offer one course this spring beginning Monday, May 9, as part of its American Management Association’s certificate program. The course registration deadline is May 5.

REDY Youth Triathlon returns to UMPI Sept. 11

It’s back by popular demand. After taking 2015 off, the REDY Youth Triathlon returns to the University of Maine at Presque Isle Campus on Sunday, September 11, 2016. The on-line registration site will be live very soon for this event aimed at getting kids to be more active.

Reed Gallery presents Plein Air Painters of Maine

The University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Reed Art Gallery is proud to present PAPME at UMPI by the Plein Air Painters of Maine organization, from Monday, May 2 through Sunday, June 19, 2016. These artists are uniquely experienced in capturing their impressions of the Maine landscape and coastline that can only be experienced while painting under the open sky. The public is invited to view the exhibition throughout the show’s run and attend the Gallery Reception on Friday, May 6 from 5-7 p.m., which is being held in conjunction with the First Friday Art Walk. The event will include a Gallery Talk with select artists at 5:30 p.m.
