UMPI alum Bob Tarpey awarded top honor

University of Maine at Presque Isle alumus Bob Tarpey received a major honor this month for his work as an Athletic Trainer for the Toronto Blue Jays organization. Tarpey was named the 2014 Minor League Athletic Trainer of the Year by the Professional Baseball Athletic Trainers Society (PBATS). He was presented with his national award in early December by PBATS at the annual Baseball Winter Meetings in San Diego.

McCartney published two science papers

University of Maine at Presque Isle Trustees Professor Kevin McCartney recently published two papers in international science journals. Both papers are about the silicoflagellate double skeletons. These are two paired skeletons that were connected prior to the division of the microorganism into two cells. One of the articles was published in the journal Marine Micropaleontology and the other in the Journal of Nannoplankton Research. McCartney is first author on both articles, which include 12 other authors from eight countries in Europe, Asia and Australia.

UMPI hosts the first Northern Maine Regional Brain Bee

University of Maine at Presque Isle Biology professor Dr. Rachael Hannah and Aroostook County high school teachers are working together to hold the 1st Northern Maine Regional Brain Bee on Dec. 12, 2014, on the UMPI campus. The event is being held in conjunction with faculty from the University of Maine at Machias and the University of New England as they will be holding the Eastern Maine Regional Brain Bee and the Southern Maine Regional Brain Bee, respectively, on their campuses on the same day.

UMPI’s Reed Fine Art Gallery presents exhibit on Presque Isle’s past

The University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Reed Fine Art Gallery will present Pictures, Postcards, and Plates: Souvenirs of Presque Isle’s Past, presented by the Presque Isle Historical Society, from Dec. 5, 2014, through Jan. 10, 2015. The public is invited to view the exhibition throughout the show’s run and attend the Opening Reception, on Dec. 5 from 5-7 p.m., which is being held in conjunction with the First Friday Art Walk.

UMPI BFA students to present Mini-Show

The University of Maine at Presque Isle Fine Art Program faculty members are pleased to announce the BFA Student Mini-Show, an event developed through the 2014 Fine Art Senior Thesis Exhibition course. The Mini-Show exhibition will be hosted in the Pullen Art Gallery from Dec. 5, 2014, through Jan. 20, 2015. An opening reception will be held during the First Friday Art Walk on Dec. 5 from 6-8 p.m. Artists will conduct a short gallery talk at 6:30 p.m. The public is invited to attend this free event.

UMPI announces new Sustainable Agriculture concentration

In an effort to support local agricultural interests and provide skilled workers for one of the region’s primary economic drivers, the University of Maine at Presque Isle has established a new Sustainable Agriculture concentration within the Environmental Science and Sustainability program. This is the only agricultural-related bachelor’s degree program being offered north of Orono.

Roe receives National Science Foundation research opportunity award

University of Maine at Presque Isle Assistant Professor of Biology Dr. Judith Roe has been awarded a $23,356 Research Opportunity Award from the National Science Foundation as part of a larger project being conducted at the University of California at Davis. Through her sub-award, Dr. Roe will work under the direction of Dr. Johanna Schmitt, UC Davis professor of Evolution and Ecology and the NSF award’s principal investigator.

3rd annual World Polio Day and Purple Pinkie Project a success

With the help of the Rotary Clubs in Caribou, Fort Fairfield, Limestone and Washburn, the University of Maine at Presque Isle and the Presque Isle Rotary Club are declaring their 3rd annual World Polio Day and Purple Pinkie Project celebration—which spread throughout central Aroostook County and was held between Oct. 18 and 25—a big success. All activities helped to raise awareness of Rotary International’s efforts to eradicate polio worldwide. Combined efforts among the clubs helped to raise an estimated $2,600 for that global effort.

Ghazaleh “Oz” Sailors serves as first-ever DLS student speaker

The University of Maine at Presque Isle’s very own, and first-ever student Distinguished Lecturer, Ghazaleh “Oz” Sailors will serve as the next speaker in the 2014-2015 Distinguished Lecturer Series on Tuesday, Nov. 18, at 7 p.m., in the Campus Center. Sailors will deliver her talk, Breaking Barriers and Chasing Dreams. Her talk is free and the public is encouraged to attend this special event.
