Documentary filmmaker to speak about The Blue Brain Project

The University of Maine at Presque Isle is pleased to announce the next speaker in its 2013-2014 University Distinguished Lecturer Series—Noah Hutton, a documentary filmmaker and neuroscience enthusiast who will deliver a talk titled Engaging Minds: The Blue Brain Project and the Race to Understand the Human Brain on Tuesday, April 15, at 7 p.m. in the Campus Center. His talk is free and the public is invited to be a part of this special evening.

UMPI to celebrate 13th annual University Day

From witch hunts and trips to Tanzania to oceanography and honey bees, students at the University of Maine at Presque Isle will showcase their academic research, scholarly work and community service on Wednesday, April 16, during University Day. The theme of this year’s event is Engaging Minds for Student Success.

BYU-Idaho Sinfonietta to present concert at UMPI

The Brigham Young University-Idaho Sinfonietta, a 38-member chamber orchestra from Rexburg, Idaho, will present a spring concert in the University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Wieden Auditorium on Thursday, April 17 at 7 p.m. The Sinfonietta’s performance is part of a two-week tour through Québec, the Maritime Provinces, and locations in Massachusetts and Maine during April. This concert is free though donations will be accepted at the door for The American Cancer Society.

UMPI announces Johnston Estabrook Family Scholarship Fund

When the six Johnston siblings think of their parents, they think about how much the two tried to instill a lifelong love of learning, whether it was at the dinner table, in the family car, or by the examples they set in their lives. To honor their parents, the six grown children—Loretta, Mary, Bill, Chuck, Janice, and John—have given a generous gift to the University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Foundation for a scholarship to be established in memory of Raymond B. and Elizabeth H. Estabrook Johnston.

Stanley to receive Distinguished Recent Alumni Award

The University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Alumni Board of Directors has announced that Megan (Fowler) Stanley, special education teacher in Ashland, has been named the recipient of its 2014 Distinguished Recent Alumni Award. Stanley will be presented with the award during the University Day luncheon at Noon on Wednesday, April 16, in the Campus Center.

University hosts Career, Job & Grad School Fair

With more than 30 businesses and governmental agencies from across the region and throughout the state planning to participate, the University of Maine at Presque Isle is preparing to host its biggest career fair in recent years and expanding the event to include information on attending graduate school. UMPI’s Career, Job & Grad School Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 10, in the Campus Center.

UMPI recognized again by Maine Tobacco-Free College Network

The University of Maine at Presque Isle was recently recognized by the Maine Tobacco-Free College Network with a Gold Award as part of its Gold Star Standards of Excellence Recognition Program. The program celebrates the efforts of Maine institutions of higher education to address tobacco use on their campuses. This is the first time the University has received a Gold Award.

SAGE presents Spring 2014 class offerings

A University of Maine at Presque Isle program that serves “intellectually curious” local residents over 50 and believes in “learning for life” is presenting its Spring 2014 session, offering participants the opportunity to learn about everything from martial arts to meteorology. Spring classes are underway between March and May and, while some courses have begun, others will be held starting in April. To sign up for classes, contact Mary Lawrence at 768-9502.

Planet Head Day raises more than $20,000 for C-A-N-C-E-R

Officials with the University of Maine at Presque Isle and C-A-N-C-E-R are pleased to announce that the 8th Annual Planet Head Day raised more than $21,000 for the local cancer organization. Dozens of community members shaved their heads (or donned bald caps) and had them painted as planets, moons and comets for the region’s most unique fundraiser, which brings together space science education and cancer awareness into a single package.
