McCartney prepares for a year of research

Kevin McCartney, Professor of Geology at the University of Maine at Presque Isle, will depart for a year of research—first on the other side of the country and later on the other side of the world–at the beginning of September. He will complete a semester sabbatical at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln, to be followed by a Fulbright to India during the spring. During the eight or nine months that he will be away from northern Maine, he will pursue his lifelong interest in a group of single-celled fossils known as silicoflagellates.

University announces 2021 graduates

Two hundred and twenty-seven students graduated from the University of Maine at Presque Isle during the 2020-2021 academic year. On Saturday, May 8, during the University’s 112th Commencement and second-ever virtual Commencement ceremony, President Rice conferred degrees upon the graduating students.

Reed Gallery reopens with ACHROMATIC exhibition

After being closed to the public for 16 months, the University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Reed Art Gallery is proud to present ACHROMATIC – A Celebration of Black-and-White Art. The show opens on July 23 and will be on display through Sept. 17, 2021. The public is invited to view the exhibition throughout the show’s run and attend the Opening Reception on Friday, July 23 from 5-7 p.m.

UMPI, City of Presque Isle announce new pool partnership

After collaborating since 2014 to offer the city’s aquatics program at the Gentile Hall pool, the City of Presque Isle and the University of Maine at Presque Isle have established a new pool partnership meant to increase efficiencies and cost savings while providing more access to the central Aroostook region.

Employees honored during recognition event

The University of Maine at Presque Isle honored many employees for their years of service during the Employee Recognition event on May 21, held virtually for the first time.  This year’s event recognized employees who marked a milestone anniversary in 2020 or 2021. Forty-four employees were recognized for their combined 595 years of service to the University.

Two hundred and three students graduated from the University of Maine at Presque Isle on Saturday, May 8, during the University’s Virtual Commencement Ceremony—held to celebrate the achievements of the Class of 2021 despite a public health situation that still precludes large, in-person gatherings. This is only the second time in UMPI’s history that a commencement has been held virtually.

UMPI YourPace student enjoys sweet victory in graduation

St Nicholas Burrus has overcome many obstacles in his life—hearing loss, a heart transplant, and even death—but getting his college degree after being told his whole life that he couldn’t do it is an especially sweet victory. Burrus, 31, is from Bakersfield, California, and will graduate during the University of Maine at Presque Isle’s 112th Commencement on Saturday, May 8 with his Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration with a Management and Leadership concentration.
