UMPI hosts first-ever virtual Commencement

For the first time in its history, the University of Maine at Presque Isle will host a Virtual Commencement Ceremony as it aims to celebrate the achievements of its Class of 2020 despite a public health situation that precludes a large, in-person gathering. UMPI’s 111th Commencement Ceremony will take place on Saturday, May 9, 2020, at 10:30 a.m. on UMPI’s Youtube channel.

UMPI project for Nursing lab goes out to bid

The University of Maine at Presque Isle plans to transform an old lecture hall into a state-of-the-art Nursing lab through its new Folsom Hall renovation project, which went out to bid last week. The update to the space on the first floor of UMPI’s major classroom building will allow for a 7-bed healthcare lab with full connectivity and a wide range of simulation capabilities.

ACAP, UMPI partner to establish wellness shelter at Wieden Gym

The Wieden Hall Gym at the University of Maine at Presque Isle will serve as a temporary wellness shelter for individuals currently experiencing homelessness in Aroostook County thanks to a unique collaboration between Aroostook County Action Program, UMPI, Aroostook County Emergency Management Agency, City of Presque Isle, Maine State Housing Authority, and Homeless Services of Aroostook.

UMPI hosts Law Day with University of Maine School of Law

The University of Maine at Presque Isle and the University of Maine School of Law are partnering to host a Law Day event on Thursday, March 5 from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Campus Center, providing information for students and community members who are interested in attending law school and pursuing careers in law. This event is free and open to the public.

Planet Head Day to be held March 14

PlanetHeads of all shapes and sizes will gather for the 14th Annual Planet Head Day on Saturday, March 14, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Wieden Gymnasium. The event serves as the region’s most unique fundraiser: people have the chance to shave their heads and get them painted as planets in support of patients who lose their hair during cancer treatment. This event is free and the public is encouraged to attend.

UMFK, UMPI acquire 3D anatomy tables for Nursing Program

Students in the University of Maine at Fort Kent Nursing program, both on the Fort Kent campus and at the University of Maine at Presque Isle, have a high-tech new way to learn about human anatomy with the universities’ acquisition of two state-of-the art Anatomage tables. These tables, used by the world’s top medical schools and hospitals and featured by TEDTalks and PBS, are described as the most technologically advanced 3D visualization systems for anatomy and physiology education.

UMPI hosts next Science Lunchtime Seminar Series

Three academic programs at the University of Maine at Presque Isle will host the next Science Lunchtime Seminar Series this spring to provide more exciting ways for the community to explore the world of science in northern Maine. The Environmental Science and Sustainability, Biology, and Agricultural Science programs present their 14th semi-annual lunchtime seminar series, providing a forum to present scientific research conducted by UMPI students and faculty, and local and regional scientists, as well as topics in management, medicine and applied science. All are invited to attend.

UMPI showcases L.A. comedian, campus acts during Variety Show

The University of Maine at Presque Isle will present a night of comedy and local talent when it hosts UMPI’s Second Annual Variety Show on Thursday, Feb. 27 at 6 p.m. in the Auditorium in Wieden Hall. This family-friendly Variety Show will feature acts by students and other members of the campus community, and will be hosted by Los Angeles-based stand-up comedian Noah Copfer. This event is free and open to the public.

Gentile Hall gets $40,000 in new equipment

The Gentile Hall fitness center at the University of Maine at Presque Isle recently installed just over $40,000 in new strength training equipment, replacing the original strength machines installed when the facility opened in January 2006.
