UMPI professor receives prestigious Polish research fellowship

The new year means another adventure for Kevin McCartney, Professor of Geology and Environmental Science at the University of Maine at Presque Isle, who is heading to Poland on Jan. 4 after being awarded a prestigious Kosciuszko Fellowship to conduct research in the field of micropaleontology. McCartney will return to Szczecin, Poland, to build on the research he did during the 2016 to 2107 academic year as the first Fulbright Scholar in northern Maine’s history.

UMPI creates Career Clothing Closet

Students in need of professional attire have a new resource available to them now that the University of Maine at Presque Isle has opened up its Career Clothing Closet. Designed especially for students, the store is open in the Campus Store. All are welcome to visit and donate to the closet, which is sponsored by the Student Activities Office, the Career Readiness Program, and the Campus Store.

7th Annual Purple Pinkie Project a success

The University of Maine at Presque Isle and the Presque Isle Rotary Club have declared their 7th Annual Purple Pinkie Project, held on Friday, Nov. 9, a success. With the help of the Rotary Clubs in Caribou, Fort Fairfield, Limestone, Mars Hill, and Washburn, the celebration spread throughout central Aroostook County and, for the third time, into Canada. Combined efforts helped to raise nearly $3,000 to go toward Rotary International’s efforts to eradicate polio worldwide.

UMPI presents Student Career Readiness Days

The University of Maine at Presque Isle will be hosting two Student Career Readiness Days—on Monday, Dec. 3 in the Folsom Commuter Lounge and Thursday, Dec. 6 in the Campus Center, room 118–for students looking to receive tools, resources, and assistance as they make their way through the professional world. Both events will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The events, sponsored by the Career Readiness Office, the Community and Media Relations Office, the Student Activities Office, and the Student Government Association, are open to all students.

UMPI presents next Salmagundi Film Series screening

The University of Maine at Presque Isle will present its next Salmagundi Film Series screening on Tuesday, Dec. 11, at 6 p.m. in the Auditorium in Wieden Hall. In honor of the winter season, the series will feature Eddie the Eagle, the 2016 film based on the real-life story of Olympic skier Michael “Eddie” Edwards.

Classical pianist performs hometown concert

Classical pianist Duncan J. Cumming returns home for a concert at the University of Maine at Presque Isle on Tuesday, Nov. 27 at 7 p.m. in the Campus Center.  This event is free and open to the public; donations will be accepted at the door for future cultural events.

Boyle to deliver night of laughs at UMPI

For the second consecutive year, the University of Maine at Presque Isle will present comedian Hailey Boyle—featured on TBS’s list of 101 funniest working comics in the world—for a night of laugh-out-loud fun. Boyle will perform on Tuesday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. in the Auditorium in Wieden Hall. This event is free, open to the public, and is rated PG-13.

UMPI enrollment up 10 percent for Fall 2018

For the second year in a row, the University of Maine at Presque Isle has seen the largest percentage increase in enrollment within the University of Maine System, up 10.4% in enrollment by headcount from Fall 2017 to Fall 2018. Officials attribute this increase to the initiatives underway at UMPI focused on student affordability, early college opportunities, and access for adult learners.
