UMPI recognized again by Maine Tobacco-Free College Network

The University of Maine at Presque Isle was recently recognized by the Breathe Easy Coalition’s Maine Tobacco-Free College Network with a Gold Award as part of its Gold Star Standards of Excellence Recognition Program. The program celebrates the efforts of Maine institutions of higher education to address tobacco use on their campuses. This is the third time the University has received a Gold Award.

Leadership development expert serves as Distinguished Lecturer

The University of Maine at Presque Isle is pleased to announce the next speaker in its 2015-2016 Distinguished Lecturer Series—Dr. Matthew Kutz, an award-winning author, professor, Fulbright Scholar, and leadership development expert. Dr. Kutz, who will speak on Tuesday, March 22, at 7 p.m. in the Campus Center, will offer his presentation, Abandoning the Status Quo and Embracing Chaos and Uncertainty as a New Fundamental Life Skill. This talk is free and the public is invited to be a part of this special evening.

UMPI club hosts Brain Awareness Week celebration

The University of Maine at Presque Isle Biomedical Club is celebrating International Brain Awareness Week [BAW] in March with two events—a Kids Brain Game Night on March 15 and “Neuroscience and a Movie” on March 24. The public is invited to attend these free events.

UMPI 100% Society to present Gender Diversity talk

The UMPI 100% Society will host a special guest speaker for a community presentation on LGBTQ+ issues on Wednesday, March 23 at 6 p.m. in Room 118 of the Campus Center. Matthew Francis, a long-time activist on transgender and other social issues, will speak on Gender Diversity during this presentation. All are welcome to attend this free event.

UMPI alum to appear on TBS show

University of Maine at Presque Isle alumna Erin Pelletier has done a lot since graduating in 2009—including moving to Atlanta and graduating from law school—and now she can add national game show contestant to her list. Pelletier and her boyfriend Troy Connolly will appear tonight on the premiere episode of the new TBS game show Separation Anxiety.

UMPI students host 23rd Fit and Fun Day

Getting exercise while having fun? That’s the goal of the 23rd semi-annual Fit and Fun Day, which will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday, March 19 in the University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Gentile Hall. Student organizers welcome kids ages 5 to 11 to participate in the event, which is designed to promote physical activity and healthy lifestyles for local children. Free registration begins at 9 a.m., with games and activities to follow. Those who arrive early will have the opportunity to showcase their creativity in the Art Corner.

UMPI to host viewing party for fans when Owls appear in national tournament

The University of Maine at Presque Isle Men’s Basketball team will be participating for the very first time in the USCAA National Tournament, and the University is ensuring that all fans who can’t join the team in Pennsylvania have an opportunity to gather in Presque Isle for the big game. The University will host a viewing party of the game on Wednesday, March 2, in the Owl’s Nest, located on the first floor of the Campus Center. The game will be live streamed online and tip-off is at 8 p.m. All are invited to attend this free event and cheer on the UMPI Men’s Basketball team.

UMPI and UMFK students prepare for political debate

Students from the University of Maine at Fort Kent and the University of Maine at Presque Isle will gather for a unique political debate between UMFK’s College Republicans and UMPI’s College Democrats on Friday, March 11 from 5-7 p.m. in the Fox Auditorium at UMFK. This will be a formal debate, and attendance by community members of all ages is encouraged.

10th Planet Head Day a success

The University of Maine at Presque Isle and C-A-N-C-E-R [Caring Area Neighbors for Cancer Education and Recovery] are pleased to announce that the 10th Annual Planet Head Day, held on Feb. 20 in Wieden Gymnasium, raised nearly $20,000. Nearly 50 County citizens had their heads shaved, while others donned bald caps, and had them painted to look like planets, moons, comets, and other celestial bodies during this unique fundraiser that brings together space science education and cancer awareness. The event has become one of the most widely known single-day fundraising events in northern Maine.
