Tarpey to receive Distinguished Recent Alumni Award

The University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Alumni Board of Directors has announced that Robert “Bob” Tarpey, an Athletic Trainer for the Toronto Blue Jays organization, has been named the recipient of its 2015 Distinguished Recent Alumni Award. Tarpey will be presented with the award during the University Day luncheon at Noon on Wednesday, April 15, in the Campus Center.

A cappella group Eh440 takes stage at UMPI

Eh440, an award-winning, Toronto-based a cappella group that bills itself as “5 voices, 0 instruments, and 1 new amazing sound” will take the stage at the University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Auditorium at Wieden Hall on Wednesday, April 8, at 7 p.m. This night of musical harmony is free and open to the public.

University hosts Career, Job & Grad School Fair

With approximately 25 businesses and governmental agencies from across the region and throughout the state planning to participate, the University of Maine at Presque Isle is preparing to host its Career, Job & Grad School Fair from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, April 7, in the Campus Center.

UMPI recognized again by Maine Tobacco-Free College Network

The University of Maine at Presque Isle was recently recognized by the Maine Tobacco-Free College Network with a Gold Award as part of its Gold Star Standards of Excellence Recognition Program. The program celebrates the efforts of Maine institutions of higher education to address tobacco use on their campuses. This is the second time the University has received a Gold Award.

UMPI, local organizations partner to host Brain Awareness Week celebration

The University of Maine at Presque Isle is partnering with two community organizations—the Wintergreen Arts Center and TAMC—to celebrate Brain Awareness Week [BAW] in March. There are two main components to the region’s Fifth Annual Brain Awareness Week festivities: a children’s Brain Art Contest with community judging that took place on Friday, March 6, and a Celebration of the Brain event taking place on Thursday, March 26.

UMPI’s College of Education rolls out new program for Ed Techs

Educational Technicians in Maine have the unique opportunity to complete their student teaching right in the classrooms where they are already working thanks to a new program provided by the University of Maine at Presque Isle.

The new K-8 Student Teaching Opportunity for Qualifying, Employed Educational Technicians, offered by UMPI’s College of Education, received approval from the Maine Department of Education’s Certification Division last semester, and six candidates already have taken advantage of the opportunity—one in Aroostook County, and five more in central, southern and western Maine.

UMPI Art students create tape art installations

The University of Maine at Presque Isle’s ART 101 Basic Design class is participating in a campus-wide project to make their (temporary) statement on the University. The students were tasked with creating “tape art” installations, using painter’s tape and a whole lot of imagination.

Endangered Alphabets Project founder serves as Distinguished Lecturer

The University of Maine at Presque Isle is pleased to announce the next speaker in its 2014-2015 Distinguished Lecturer Series—Tim Brookes, the founder of the Endangered Alphabets Project and award-winning author of 14 books. Brookes, who will speak on Thursday, March 19, at 7 p.m., in the Auditorium at Wieden Hall, will discuss how he has incorporated his artistic skills as a writer, painter, and wood carver into “saving” alphabets on the verge of extinction by carving them into wood. Some of Brookes’ Endangered Alphabets artwork, which has been displayed across the country and around the world, will be on display during his talk. This talk is free and the public is invited to be a part of this special evening.
