Prepare for a night of mind-blowing songwriting, rapping and musical instrumentation when Hip-Hop artist King Zimm comes to the University of Maine at Presque Isle on Thursday, Oct. 26. The performance will be held in the Auditorium in Wieden Hall at 7 p.m. The evening performance will be open and free to the community.
Born Khafre Zimmerman in Camden, New Jersey, King Zimm is a multi-talented singer, songwriter, Hip-Hop artist, and instrumentalist. A member of a classically musical family, King Zimm has a percussionist father, a singer for a mother, and a producer for an uncle.
He got his creative start writing poetry as a child after his family moved to the Philadelphia suburbs. His verses naturally blended into his love of Hip-Hop and, by junior high, he could be found participating in schoolyard rap battles. When he was in high school, he was introduced to different musical styles that he now incorporates into his own music, and, ever since he picked up his guitar, he hasn’t been able to put it down.
King Zimm attended Howard University, where he performed three years consecutively at his school’s Homecoming activities. His song stylings have also led him to perform at the Apollo Theater in Harlem and enjoy numerous appearances at local clubs in Washington, D.C.
King Zimm has opened for the likes of Rick Ross, Big Sean and J- Cole, performers who have his same musical interests in Hip-Hop. While Hip-Hop provides his primary sound, he also combines it with soul, and Rock & Roll, to form a style he coins “Rock & Flow.” His debut album The Best of King Zimm was released in August 2016. The album consists of upbeat and soulful songs about love and loss, told with depth and emotion.
