UMPI’s Reed Art Gallery presents Recent Acquisitions exhibit

The University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Reed Art Gallery will present Recent Acquisitions, an exhibit showcasing recent artwork donated to the University by acclaimed artists and their foundations, from June 2 through August 11, 2017. All four featured artists–John Paul Caponigro, Andy Warhol, Joyce Tenneson and Bernard Langlais–have been the focus of exhibits in the Reed Art Gallery during the past few years. The public is invited to view the exhibition throughout the show’s run and attend the Gallery Reception on Friday, June 2, from 5-7 p.m., which is being held in conjunction with the First Friday Art Walk.

University of Maine at Presque Isle hosts 108th Commencement

One hundred and seventy-six students graduated from the University of Maine at Presque Isle on Saturday, May 13, during the 2017 Commencement Exercises—the University’s 108th Commencement ceremony. UMPI Interim President and Provost Raymond Rice conferred degrees for the 2016-2017 academic year upon 126 students who participated in the ceremony held in Wieden Gymnasium.

UMPI students hold pop-up art show

On Friday May 12, 2017, three students from the University of Maine at Presque Isle Fine Arts program–Mollie Hicks, Monica Quist, and Arianna Forbes–are coming together to create a fun, pop-up exhibition to feature their finished works and studies of the human form. This one-day-only show, titled Body: An Exhibition of the Human Form, will take from 6-8 p.m. at 551 Main St., Suite 3, just behind Precision Tattoo, and is free and open to the public.

Aroostook Youth Tri Club Begins May 12

The Aroostook Medical Center and the University of Maine at Presque Isle have once again teamed up to bring a fun event to The County this summer. The Aroostook Youth Triathlon is set for June 17, 2017 on the UMPI campus. To help area youth get ready for the big event, an Aroostook Youth Tri Club is getting underway on Friday, May 12.

Former U.S. Ambassador John L. Estrada to speak during UMPI’s 108th Commencement Exercises

University of Maine at Presque Isle President and Provost Ray Rice has announced that John L. Estrada, the former U.S. Ambassador to Trinidad and Tobago, will deliver the commencement address during the University’s 108th Commencement Ceremony, to be held on Saturday, May 13, 2017. During the event, an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters Degree will be presented to Laurence A. Park, who is part of a long legacy of Park family members who have been integral in the life of the campus.

Dave Mallett offers coffeehouse-style concert at UMPI

Folk singer-songwriter Dave Mallett returns to the University of Maine at Presque Isle for a special coffeehouse-style performance at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 3, in the Campus Center. Accompanied by his band, Mallett will perform songs from his new album Celebration, as well as works from his decades-long career. All are invited to attend this event; donations will be accepted at the door to go toward future cultural arts programming.

5th Annual Safe Homes run/walk taking place at UMPI

The University of Maine at Presque will serve as the host site of the 5th Annual Safe Homes Aroostook “Move to End Homelessness” 5K fundraiser on Sunday, May 7, 2017, at 1 p.m. The 5K fun run/walk, a timed event that will be held rain or shine, will start and end at Gentile Hall and wind along the city’s sidewalks and bike path. Pre-registration check-in and same-day registration will begin at Noon.

UMPI Art Program hosts Empty Bowls fundraiser

The University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Art Program is taking a turn at the pottery wheel to help fight hunger on a local scale. The program, with the assistance of students and local ceramicists, will create and sell unique handmade bowls—with funds raised going to a local soup kitchen—as part of the region’s fourth Empty Bowls fundraiser, taking place on Thursday, April 27, from 6-8 p.m. in the Sargent Family Community Center (Presque Isle Recreation Center).
