The University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Reed Art Gallery is proud to present PAPME at UMPI by the Plein Air Painters of Maine organization, from Monday, May 2 through Sunday, June 19, 2016. These artists are uniquely experienced in capturing their impressions of the Maine landscape and coastline that can only be experienced while painting under the open sky. The public is invited to view the exhibition throughout the show’s run and attend the Gallery Reception on Friday, May 6 from 5-7 p.m., which is being held in conjunction with the First Friday Art Walk. The event will include a Gallery Talk with select artists at 5:30 p.m.

The University of Maine at Presque will serve as the host site of the 4th Annual Safe Homes Aroostook “Move to End Homelessness” 5K fundraiser on Sunday, May 1, 2016, at 1 p.m. The 5K fun run/walk, a timed event that will be held rain or shine, will start and end at Gentile Hall and wind along the city’s sidewalks and bike path. Pre-registration check-in and same-day registration will begin at 11:30 a.m.

WASHINGTON, D.C.–Dr. Kevin McCartney of the University of Maine at Presque Isle has been offered a Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program grant to Poland to continue his research in the field of micropaleontology, the United States Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board announced recently.

The University of Maine at Presque Isle is pleased to present Jim Keady, a nationally renowned educator, activist, and filmmaker, as the last speaker in its 2015-2016 Distinguished Lecturer Series. During his talk, Behind the Swoosh, Keady will focus on sweatshops and social justice as he share stories of his decade-and-a-half-long efforts to end sweatshop abuses. His presentation, which also serves as the keynote address for UMPI’s 15th Annual University Day, will take place on Tuesday, April 19, at 7 p.m. in the Campus Center. This event is free and the public is invited to be a part of this special evening.

From “response to intervention” strategies and the Maine State Lottery to antibiotic resistant genes and women redefining culture, students at the University of Maine at Presque Isle will showcase their academic research, scholarly work and community service on Wednesday, April 20, during University Day. The theme of this year’s event is Disrupting the Status Quo.

The University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Studio 923 Art Club will be hosting its very first Trash to Fashion Show on Earth Day, April 22, 2016. The show, to be held at 7 p.m. in the Auditorium in Wieden Hall, will feature the fashion design skills of students and community members in a runway show. All creations are made exclusively from recycled materials. The public is invited and encouraged to attend this event; there is a suggested $5 ticket price.

The sounds of Afro-Latin drumming will fill the Auditorium in Wieden Hall when the University of Maine at Presque Isle presents Michael Wingfield on Monday, April 11 at 7 p.m. Admission is free but donations for future cultural arts programming will be accepted at the door.
