UMPI student organizes screening of “Raising Ms. President”

A University of Maine at Presque Isle student is shining a spotlight on efforts to ‘raise the next generation of female political leaders’ by organizing a live stream screening of a film aimed at getting more women involved in politics. The screening of the film Raising Ms. President, which is part of a nationwide event, will be held on Saturday, Oct. 11 at 3 p.m. in Folsom Hall, Room 105. This event is free and the public is invited to attend.

DaPonte String Quartet to perform Oct. 2

The DaPonte String Quartet—which has appeared on stages in France, Scotland, Canada, and extensively throughout the U.S., and has been featured on CBS Sunday Morning—will perform an evening concert at the University of Maine at Presque on Thursday, Oct. 2, at 7 p.m. in the Wieden Hall auditorium. This event is free and the public is invited to attend.

Gentile Hall hosts 3rd Annual Breast Cancer Awareness event

The staff at the University of Maine at Presque Isle’s health and wellness facility are partnering with The Aroostook Medical Center to celebrate National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October with the 3rd Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Women’s Expo. The event will focus on breast cancer prevention and early detection, healthy living, stress relief and celebrating life. The Breast Cancer Awareness Women’s Expo will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 1 from 6–9 p.m. at Gentile Hall. This event is free and campus and community members of all ages are invited to attend.

UMPI hosts 4th annual Make-A-Wish Walk

The University of Maine at Presque Isle will host a Make-A-Wish Walk on Thursday, Sept. 25 starting at 7 p.m. in the Campus Center. This event is sponsored and organized by the Dean of Students Office. Check-in and on-site registration begins at 6 p.m. in the Multi-Purpose Room. This event is free and open to the public.

Gentile Hall offers Week of Wellness Sept. 23-25

The staff at the University of Maine at Presque Isle’s health and wellness facility are celebrating a Week of Wellness next week, between Wednesday and Friday, Sept. 23 and 25, and are pleased to invite campus and community members of all ages to take part in fun and free activities focused on healthy living. The event is sponsored in part by Cary Medical Center’s Healthy YOU program, and is free and open to the public. Free prizes and snacks will be provided throughout the three-day event.

Nationally known organic farming expert Eliot Coleman to serve as DLS speaker

The University of Maine at Presque Isle is pleased to announce that it will kick off its 2014-2015 University Distinguished Lecturer Series with a talk by Eliot Coleman, a nationally known organic farming expert and the author of The New Organic Grower, Four Season Harvest and The Winter Harvest Handbook. Coleman will deliver his talk, Nothing Is Impossible: The Possibilities of Feeding the World, on Tuesday, Sept. 23, at 7 p.m. in the Campus Center. Coleman’s talk is free and the public is invited to be a part of this special evening.

UMPI celebrates Constitution Day with presentation on constitutional rights

The University of Maine at Presque Isle will celebrate the 227th birthday of the signing of the U.S. Constitution with a special presentation delivered by Dr. Brent Andersen, an assistant professor of political science (adjunct) at the University.

On Wednesday, September 17, from 10 to 11 a.m., students, faculty, staff and community members are invited to observe Constitution Day by gathering in the University’s Campus Center for the special lecture, which is titled Constitutional Rights: Past, Present, and Future. This event is free and open to the public.

UMPI announces Educator, Distinguished Alumni awardees

The University of Maine at Presque Isle and the Alumni Association will honor two alumni with awards of distinction during Homecoming 2014 activities held the Sept. 18-21 weekend. The annual alumni award presentations will be made during the Homecoming Alumni and Friends Brunch, which will take place on Saturday, Sept. 20, at 10:30 a.m. in the Alumni Room, Campus Center.

Alumnus Arthur “Skip” Hanson will be honored with the Distinguished Educator Award, which is presented to an alumnus/alumna who has received ongoing recognition as an outstanding educator. This recipient may also have shown active or supportive involvement with the Alumni Association, support of the University, a successful career that reflects well on the University, and outstanding leadership qualities.

Alumna Virginia Joles will receive the Distinguished Alumni Award, which is presented to an alumnus/alumna who has made long-term contributions to the Alumni Association or the University, or who has received professional recognition that has reflected positively on the University.
