UMPI recognized again by Maine Tobacco-Free College Network

The University of Maine at Presque Isle was recently recognized by the Maine Tobacco-Free College Network with a Gold Award as part of its Gold Star Standards of Excellence Recognition Program. The program celebrates the efforts of Maine institutions of higher education to address tobacco use on their campuses. This is the first time the University has received a Gold Award.

SAGE presents Spring 2014 class offerings

A University of Maine at Presque Isle program that serves “intellectually curious” local residents over 50 and believes in “learning for life” is presenting its Spring 2014 session, offering participants the opportunity to learn about everything from martial arts to meteorology. Spring classes are underway between March and May and, while some courses have begun, others will be held starting in April. To sign up for classes, contact Mary Lawrence at 768-9502.

Planet Head Day raises more than $20,000 for C-A-N-C-E-R

Officials with the University of Maine at Presque Isle and C-A-N-C-E-R are pleased to announce that the 8th Annual Planet Head Day raised more than $21,000 for the local cancer organization. Dozens of community members shaved their heads (or donned bald caps) and had them painted as planets, moons and comets for the region’s most unique fundraiser, which brings together space science education and cancer awareness into a single package.

175th anniversary of Aroostook County’s incorporation to include time capsule barrel opening

The UMPI Library will be full of Aroostook County history, County-themed refreshments, and even a little singing when the Friends of the Aroostook County Historical Center and the University of Maine at Presque Isle mark the 175th anniversary of Aroostook County’s incorporation on Sunday, March 16, 2014, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. The community is invited and encouraged to attend this free event, sponsored by KeyBank and the County of Aroostook.

Eight Strings and a Whistle to perform at UMPI

Eight Strings & a Whistle, a trio of musicians that has been captivating audiences throughout the Northeast since 1998—making appearances at venues from the Bar Harbor Music Festival to Symphony Space in New York City—will perform an evening concert at the University of Maine at Presque Isle on Tuesday, March 18 at 7 p.m. in Wieden Auditorium.

UMPI’s Reed Fine Art Gallery presents show by Daniel Minter

The University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Reed Fine Art Gallery will present A Heavy Grace by Portland artist, Daniel Minter, from March 17 through April 19, 2014. The public is invited to view the exhibition throughout the show’s run and attend the Opening Reception on March 7 from 5-7 p.m., which is being held in conjunction with the Presque Isle First Friday Art Walk.

UMPI, local organizations partner to host Brain Awareness Week celebration

The University of Maine at Presque Isle is partnering with two community organizations—the Wintergreen Arts Center and TAMC—to celebrate Brain Awareness Week [BAW] in early March.

There are three main components to the region’s Fourth Annual Brain Awareness Week festivities: a Brain Art Contest with community judging taking place on Friday, March 7; a Brain Game and Wii Challenge on Tuesday, March 11; and a Ceramic Brain Painting and Concussion Discussion event on Thursday, March 13, to include an award ceremony for the Brain Art Contest winners.

UMPI students host 19th Fit and Fun Day

Getting exercise while having fun? That’s the goal of the 19th semi-annual Fit and Fun Day, which will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 15 in the University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Gentile Hall. The Physical Education majors welcome kids ages 5 to 11 to participate in the event, which is designed to promote physical activity and healthy lifestyles for local children. Free registration begins at 9 a.m., with games and activities to follow.
