Research team garners USDA Specialty Crops Block grant

A team of University of Maine at Presque Isle faculty members and students have begun work in the Zillman Family Greenhouse on a research project funded by a $12,333 USDA Specialty Crops Block Grant. The project aims to support Maine potato growers by enhancing the competitiveness of potato rotation crops through cropping system innovations.

University of Maine at Presque Isle hosts 111th Commencement

One hundred and sixty-six students graduated from the University of Maine at Presque Isle on Saturday, May 9, during the University’s first-ever Virtual Commencement Ceremony—held to celebrate the achievements of the Class of 2020 despite a public health situation that precludes large, in-person gatherings. During the 111th Commencement ceremony, UMPI President Raymond Rice conferred degrees for the 2019-2020 academic year upon this year’s graduating seniors, who had the opportunity to participate in the ceremony via UMPI’s Youtube channel.

For the first time in its history, the University of Maine at Presque Isle will host a Virtual Commencement Ceremony as it aims to celebrate the achievements of its Class of 2020 despite a public health situation that precludes a large, in-person gathering. UMPI’s 111th Commencement Ceremony will take place on Saturday, May 9, 2020, at 10:30 a.m. on UMPI’s Youtube channel.

UMPI project for Nursing lab goes out to bid

The University of Maine at Presque Isle plans to transform an old lecture hall into a state-of-the-art Nursing lab through its new Folsom Hall renovation project, which went out to bid last week. The update to the space on the first floor of UMPI’s major classroom building will allow for a 7-bed healthcare lab with full connectivity and a wide range of simulation capabilities.

ACAP, UMPI partner to establish wellness shelter at Wieden Gym

The Wieden Hall Gym at the University of Maine at Presque Isle will serve as a temporary wellness shelter for individuals currently experiencing homelessness in Aroostook County thanks to a unique collaboration between Aroostook County Action Program, UMPI, Aroostook County Emergency Management Agency, City of Presque Isle, Maine State Housing Authority, and Homeless Services of Aroostook.

UMPI hosts Law Day with University of Maine School of Law

Planet Head Day to be held March 14

PlanetHeads of all shapes and sizes will gather for the 14th Annual Planet Head Day on Saturday, March 14, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Wieden Gymnasium. The event serves as the region’s most unique fundraiser: people have the chance to shave their heads and get them painted as planets in support of patients who lose their hair during cancer treatment. This event is free and the public is encouraged to attend.
