UMPI to host Maine documentary filmmaker Sept. 20

When it comes to celebrating family history, filmmaker Tonya Shevenell and her father Ray Shevenell are willing to go the distance. The two will speak about their journey to film and walk nearly 200 miles to retrace the path of one of their ancestors when the University of Maine at Presque Isle hosts a film screening of The Home Road on Thursday, Sept. 20 at 7 p.m. in the Campus Center. All are invited to attend this free event.

UMPI presents Salmagundi Film Series

To complement its Distinguished Lecturer Series and other cultural events it hosts during the school year, the University of Maine at Presque Isle has established the Salmagundi Film Series, with a screening and conversation about the film to take place every second Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m. in the Auditorium in Wieden Hall. Film series dates for the Fall 2018 semester are Sept. 11, Oct. 9, Nov. 13, and Dec. 11. All are invited to attend these free screenings, though films may not be appropriate for younger viewers.

Reed Art Gallery presents Jeanne Wells exhibit

The University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Reed Art Gallery will present Odes and Alliterations, photo-works 2003-2018 by Jeanne Wells, from Aug. 27 through Oct. 12, 2018. The public is invited to view the exhibition throughout the show’s run and attend the Gallery Reception on Friday, Sept. 7, from 5-7 p.m., which includes a talk with the artist at 5:30 p.m.; light refreshments will be served. This reception is being held in conjunction with the First Friday Art Walk. The Reed Gallery is located on the second floor of the University’s Center for Innovative Learning.

UMPI hosts grand re-opening celebration in Owl’s Nest

The Owl’s Nest in the Campus Center has a brand new look and University of Maine at Presque Isle officials are celebrating with a grand re-opening celebration and ribbon cutting event on Thursday, Sept. 6, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. All are invited to attend this free event.

Gentile Hall offers Week of Wellness Sept. 10-13

The staff at the University of Maine at Presque Isle’s health and wellness facility are kicking off the academic year with a Wellness Week, to be held from Monday, Sept. 10 to Thursday, Sept. 13, and campus and community members of all ages are invited to take part in fun and free activities focused on healthy living.

UMPI’s Foundation hosts Backyard Getaway Tour fundraiser

Tour some of the County’s best backyard escapes when the Foundation of the University at Presque Isle hosts its first ever Backyard Getaway Tour on Saturday, Aug. 25, from Noon to 3:30 p.m. This rain or shine fundraiser for the Zillman Family Greenhouse offers tours of seven “seriously awesome backyard escapes” in the Presque Isle area, including garden houses, a stand-alone man cave, and a live-in tree house. Tickets are $20 each, $30 for VIP tickets, and free for children under 12; all tour-goers will receive a Backyard Getaway wrist band that serves as their admission to the tour stops.

Color PI 5K returns

The region’s largest and most colorful 5K is back and organizers have plenty of excitement in store. The University of Maine at Presque Isle and the Wintergreen Arts Center will present the Sixth Annual Color Presque Isle 5K on Saturday, Aug. 11 at 9 a.m. starting at Riverside Park. Registration begins at 8 a.m. All are encouraged to take advantage of the early bird rate, being offered for the first time for only $25 through July 31. Registration is $35 starting Aug. 1.

UMPI, Nordic Heritage offering Adventure Camp

From mountain biking to fire building to overnight camping, local kids will experience all kinds of outdoor fun during Adventure Camp, hosted by the University of Maine at Presque Isle and the Nordic Heritage Sport Club. Adventure Camp will take place July 23 to 28 at the Nordic Heritage Center and is open to area youth from 4th grade to 8th grade.
