UMPI hosts national leader in parenting education as next DLS speaker

The University of Maine at Presque Isle, in partnership with Cary Medical Center, will present Dr. Stephen Bavolek—a national leader and researcher on parenting education and in the prevention and treatment of child abuse and neglect—as the final speaker in its 2017-2018 Distinguished Lecturer Series. Dr. Bavolek will deliver his talk, Nurturing Parenting, on Thursday, April 26, at 7 p.m. in the Campus Center. His talk is free and the public is invited to be a part of this special evening.

Splash and Dash planned in three communities; club helps kids prepare

The organizations that have partnered in the past to offer the Aroostook Youth Triathlon in Presque Isle are changing things up a bit.  New this year is a ‘Splash & Dash’ that involves swimming and running, but no biking.  The Star City Splash & Dash takes place on the campus of the University of Maine at Presque Isle on Saturday, June 16, with additional events also planned in Mapleton and Fort Fairfield during festivals in those communities.

UMPI presents #DareYourself Movement founder as next Distinguished Lecturer

The University of Maine at Presque Isle will present Hilary Corna—screenwriter, author, and founder of the #DareYourself Movement—as the next speaker in its 2017-2018 Distinguished Lecturer Series on Tuesday, April 10, at 7 p.m. in the Campus Center. Her talk serves as the keynote address for UMPI’s 17th Annual University Day—the theme of this year’s University Day and the 2017-2018 Distinguished Lecturer Series is This I Believe. This event is free and open to the public.

UMPI celebrates 17th annual University Day

This I Believe is the theme of the University of Maine at Presque Isle’s 17th annual University Day, taking place on Wednesday, April 11, and students will be showcasing that theme in presentations on everything from service learning in Tanzania to mental wellness to education for underserved students.

UMPI Art Club presents 12×12 Charity Auction April 6

The University of Maine at Presque Isle Art Club, Studio 923, is bringing back the 12×12 auction, featuring nearly 50 original works on 12-inch by 12-inch canvases just in time for the First Friday Art Walk on April 6. Proceeds from the auction will benefit the Art Club as well as the artists, who will receive a commission from their work unless they choose to donate 100% of the sale price. This event is open to the public and all are invited to attend.

UMPI, Northern Lighthouse sign area’s first Campus to Career agreement

In an effort to better meet the region’s workforce development needs, officials with the University of Maine at Presque Isle and The Northern Lighthouse Inc. will sign the area’s first local agreement meant to strengthen the collaborative efforts of both organizations in preparing students—or potential future employees—for careers in the workforce.

Tim Doak, UMPI alum and Superintendent of the Year, reflects on education

University of Maine at Presque Isle alumnus Tim Doak considers himself a pretty lucky guy. The Superintendent of RSU 39 and MSAD 20 was able to get his education close to home, have a long and rewarding local career in education, and, as of January, be just the third superintendent from northern Maine recognized as the Maine State Superintendent of the Year.

Shakespeare LIVE! presents “The Comedy of Errors” April 13

The University of Maine at Presque Isle will host Shakespeare LIVE!, a theater troupe that has performed for more than half a million students since its inception in 1997, for a performance of one of the Bard’s great comedies. The Comedy of Errors will be performed in the Auditorium at Wieden Hall on Friday, April 13 at 7 p.m. One of Shakespeare’s beloved comedies, The Comedy of Errors is best experienced as the playwright intended—live on stage. The public is invited to attend this special, family-friendly event; donations will be accepted at the door to go toward future cultural arts programming.

UMPI presents first person interpreter Jennifer Emerson
