Rotary clubs, UMPI present 6th Annual Purple Pinkie Project

The University of Maine at Presque Isle and the Presque Isle Rotary Club are joining forces to host their Sixth Annual Purple Pinkie Project on Wednesday, Feb. 7 and, with the help of the Rotary Clubs in Caribou, Fort Fairfield, Limestone, Mars Hill and Washburn, this celebration three months in the making spreads throughout central Aroostook County and—new this year—into Canada. All activities raise awareness of Rotary International’s efforts to eradicate polio worldwide and raise money $1 at a time to go toward that global effort.

Reed Art Gallery presents “Unfolding” exhibit

The University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Reed Art Gallery will present Unfolding, an exhibit focused on objects and memory by Jennifer Leigh Jones, from January 22 through March 16, 2018. The public is invited to view the exhibition throughout the show’s run and attend the Gallery Reception on Friday, February 2, from 5-7 p.m., which includes a talk with the artist at 5:30 p.m.; light refreshments will be served. This reception is being held in conjunction with the First Friday Art Walk. The Reed Gallery is located on the second floor of the University’s Center for Innovative Learning.

UMPI presents diverse entertainer Ben Seidman

Experience a night of magic and comedy as you’ve never seen it before when Ben Seidman—who has appeared on Penn & Teller: Fool Us and served as a creative consultant for Mindfreak on A&E—takes the stage at the University of Maine at Presque Isle on Friday, Feb. 2, at 7 p.m. at the Auditorium in Wieden Hall. This show is free and open to the public.

UMPI Social Work major helps students in Tanzania

Kassidy Morin, a Social Work student at the University of Maine at Presque Isle, is taking part in a service learning project to help low/no vision students at Moshi Secondary School in Moshi, Tanzania, East Africa, gain the technology they need to reach their potential as learners.

Maine Solar System Model’s Neptune is out of orbit

The planet Neptune—usually located 31 astronomical units (miles) from the Sun as part of the Maine Solar System Model along Route 1 in northern Maine—is officially out of orbit. According to Kevin McCartney, Professor at the University of Maine at Presque Isle and coordinator of the model, “space tugs” transported the planet to Northern Maine Community College (NMCC), on Earth, for maintenance this winter.

Nominations open for 11th Young Professionals Institute

MMG Insurance and the University of Maine at Presque Isle are pleased to announce that nominations are now open for the Young Professionals Institute, which has provided area professionals with impactful leadership development training for more than a decade. The Institute, facilitated by UMPI’s Employer U program, will run this year on Wednesdays from February 28 to April 11. The online nomination/application form is available at www.umpi.edu/ypi. The nomination deadline is Monday, Jan. 29.

UMPI professor continues Appalachian Trail journey

In March 2017, Jacqui Lowman, University of Maine at Presque Isle Associate Professor of Professional Communication and Journalism, embarked on the adventure of a lifetime: a hike of the Appalachian Trail. Since then she has had many profound experiences that have furthered her beliefs about teamwork and how we can all redefine “impossible.”
