University of Maine at Presque Isle hosts 107th Commencement

One hundred and fifty-four students graduated from the University of Maine at Presque Isle on Saturday, May 14, during the 2016 Commencement Exercises – the University’s 107th Commencement ceremony. President Linda Schott conferred degrees for the 2015-2016 academic year upon 85 students who participated in the ceremony held in Wieden Gymnasium.

President Linda Schott has announced that Nicholas C. Donohue, the President and CEO of the Nellie Mae Education Foundation, will deliver the commencement address during the University of Maine at Presque Isle’s 107th Commencement Ceremony, to be held on Saturday, May 14, 2016. During the event, an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters Degree will be presented to Donohue.

UMPI Art Program hosts Empty Bowls fundraiser

The University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Art Program is bringing back a popular event that spreads hunger awareness through ceramics—the area’s third Empty Bowls fundraiser will take place on Tuesday, May 10 from 6-8 p.m. at the William V. Haskell Community Center (Presque Isle Recreation Center). Organized by UMPI Assistant Professor of Art Hyrum Benson’s Ceramics I, II and III classes, this unique event gives participants the opportunity to purchase unique homemade bowls and enjoy cups of soup, all to benefit a local soup kitchen. All County residents are invited to attend. Doors will open and bowls will officially go on sale at 6 p.m.

Reed Gallery presents Plein Air Painters of Maine

The University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Reed Art Gallery is proud to present PAPME at UMPI by the Plein Air Painters of Maine organization, from Monday, May 2 through Sunday, June 19, 2016. These artists are uniquely experienced in capturing their impressions of the Maine landscape and coastline that can only be experienced while painting under the open sky. The public is invited to view the exhibition throughout the show’s run and attend the Gallery Reception on Friday, May 6 from 5-7 p.m., which is being held in conjunction with the First Friday Art Walk. The event will include a Gallery Talk with select artists at 5:30 p.m.

4th Annual Safe Homes run/walk taking place at UMPI

The University of Maine at Presque will serve as the host site of the 4th Annual Safe Homes Aroostook “Move to End Homelessness” 5K fundraiser on Sunday, May 1, 2016, at 1 p.m. The 5K fun run/walk, a timed event that will be held rain or shine, will start and end at Gentile Hall and wind along the city’s sidewalks and bike path. Pre-registration check-in and same-day registration will begin at 11:30 a.m.

UMPI Professor Kevin McCartney receives Fulbright Award

WASHINGTON, D.C.–Dr. Kevin McCartney of the University of Maine at Presque Isle has been offered a Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program grant to Poland to continue his research in the field of micropaleontology, the United States Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board announced recently.

UMPI’s Distinguished Lecturer Series presents nationally renowned educator, filmmaker Jim Keady

The University of Maine at Presque Isle is pleased to present Jim Keady, a nationally renowned educator, activist, and filmmaker, as the last speaker in its 2015-2016 Distinguished Lecturer Series. During his talk, Behind the Swoosh, Keady will focus on sweatshops and social justice as he share stories of his decade-and-a-half-long efforts to end sweatshop abuses. His presentation, which also serves as the keynote address for UMPI’s 15th Annual University Day, will take place on Tuesday, April 19, at 7 p.m. in the Campus Center. This event is free and the public is invited to be a part of this special evening.
