Nominations open for 9th Young Professionals Institute

MMG Insurance and the University of Maine at Presque Isle are pleased to announce that nominations are now open for the ninth annual Young Professionals Institute, running this year on Tuesdays from March 1 to April 12. The online nomination/application form is available at www.umpi.edu/ypi. The nomination deadline is Friday, Jan. 15.

UMPI’s Reed Art Gallery presents Scot Miller exhibit

The University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Reed Art Gallery will join in the 150th anniversary celebration of the publication of Henry David Thoreau’s seminal work when it presents The Maine Woods by nationally renowned photographer Scot Miller from Nov. 30 through Jan. 9. The public is invited to view the exhibition throughout the show’s run and attend the Opening Reception and Book Signing on Dec. 1 from 5-6:30 p.m., which is being held in conjunction with Miller’s Distinguished Lecturer presentation at 7 p.m. in the Campus Center.

UMPI SALT Team receives national recognition

The University of Maine at Presque Isle’s SALT team has been nationally recognized for its work in getting UMPI students engaged in SALT, a program that helps students to become more financially savvy and better manage their money and student loans. The nonprofit organization American Student Assistance named the SALT team a “Know Your Money” award recipient for Most Creative Program. The only other program to receive this award was from Washington State University.

ACAP’s Healthy Aroostook, UMPI and TAMC partner on Great American Smokeout and Stomp Out Hunger campaign

Three local organizations are celebrating The Great American Smokeout with a special event this week that encourages community members to go “cold turkey” while also helping the region to Stomp Out Hunger. ACAP’s Healthy Aroostook, TAMC, and UMPI will team up at Gentile Hall from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 19 to encourage smokers to quit for one day and to help fight hunger in The County in a unique way—by building food sculptures out of canned food and other nonperishables and then donating the materials to those in need.

Nationally renowned photographer to deliver multi-media DLS talk

The University of Maine at Presque Isle will host nationally renowned photographer and videographer Scot Miller as part of the 2015-2016 Distinguished Lecture Series. Miller’s multi-media presentation, titled Emerson, Muir, Thoreau: A Photographic Trilogy of American Wildness, will take place Tuesday, Dec. 1, at 7 p.m. in the University’s Campus Center. All are invited to attend this free event.

UMPI Bio-Med Club collaborates with Partners for World Health

The University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Bio-Med Club, through its partnership with the Maine-based, non-profit organization Partners for World Health [PWH], is working at the local level to make a global impact. The Bio-Med Club has asked local medical facilities for donations of medical supplies that the club will transfer to PWH so the organization can distribute them to developing countries.

McCartney publishes double skeleton fossil paper

Kevin McCartney, Professor of Geology at the University of Maine at Presque Isle, has recently published his latest paper in the international paleontology journal, Marine Micropaleontology. McCartney’s paper, which is titled Silicoflagellate double skeletons in the geologic record and serves as the cover story for the issue, results from research during the past six years on silicoflagellate double skeletons, and in particular from a Trustees Professorship in Japan last year.

UMPI provides sneak peek at Sketchbook Project

Members of the University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Fall 2015 Drawing II class have been filling small sketchbooks with all kinds of art this semester as they participate in the Brooklyn Art Library’s Sketchbook Project. Before their finished sketchbooks are submitted to the Project, however, the class will be giving the campus and community a special sneak peek at their work by hosting a show on Friday, Nov. 6 at 6 p.m. in the Pullen Art Gallery as part of the First Friday Art Walk.
