The University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Pullen Art Gallery will host a special open exhibition in February that pays homage to the feline—The Art of Meow will be on display from Feb. 5 to 26, with an opening reception on Friday, Feb. 5 from 6-8 p.m. during the February First Friday Art Walk. All are invited to attend this free event.
Graduates from high schools in western New Brunswick will be able to take advantage of a unique, tuition-saving opportunity at the University of Maine at Presque Isle beginning in Fall 2016, when the University begins offering its Good Neighbor Grants program. University and New Brunswick school officials—including the Superintendent for the Anglophone West School District David McTimoney—were on hand for a press conference on Thursday, Jan. 21, at 10 a.m. Eastern Standard Time (11 a.m. Atlantic Time) in the UMPI Admissions Office, to officially announce the new program and share details about it.
The University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Reed Art Gallery is proud to present By the Numbers: Multiplicity, Meaning and Art by Dr. Owen F. Smith, Correll Professor of New Media at the University of Maine, from Tuesday, Jan. 19 through Saturday, Feb. 27, 2016. The public is invited to view the exhibition throughout the show’s run and attend the Gallery Reception on Friday, Feb. 5 from 5-7 p.m., which is being held in conjunction with the First Friday Art Walk. Smith will conduct an Artist Talk during the reception at 5:30 p.m.
The University of Maine Presque Isle’s Student Organization of Social Workers will host graduate school representatives from the University of New England and the University of Maine at their regular meeting times during the spring semester.
MMG Insurance and the University of Maine at Presque Isle are pleased to announce that nominations are now open for the ninth annual Young Professionals Institute, running this year on Tuesdays from March 1 to April 12. The University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Reed Art Gallery will join in the 150th anniversary celebration of the publication of Henry David Thoreau’s seminal work when it presents The Maine Woods by nationally renowned photographer Scot Miller from Nov. 30 through Jan. 9. The public is invited to view the exhibition throughout the show’s run and attend the Opening Reception and Book Signing on Dec. 1 from 5-6:30 p.m., which is being held in conjunction with Miller’s Distinguished Lecturer presentation at 7 p.m. in the Campus Center.
The University of Maine at Presque Isle’s SALT team has been nationally recognized for its work in getting UMPI students engaged in SALT, a program that helps students to become more financially savvy and better manage their money and student loans. The nonprofit organization American Student Assistance named the SALT team a “Know Your Money” award recipient for Most Creative Program. The only other program to receive this award was from Washington State University.
Three local organizations are celebrating The Great American Smokeout with a special event this week that encourages community members to go “cold turkey” while also helping the region to Stomp Out Hunger. ACAP’s Healthy Aroostook, TAMC, and UMPI will team up at Gentile Hall from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 19 to encourage smokers to quit for one day and to help fight hunger in The County in a unique way—by building food sculptures out of canned food and other nonperishables and then donating the materials to those in need.
The University of Maine at Presque Isle will host nationally renowned photographer and videographer Scot Miller as part of the 2015-2016 Distinguished Lecture Series. Miller’s multi-media presentation, titled Emerson, Muir, Thoreau: A Photographic Trilogy of American Wildness, will take place Tuesday, Dec. 1, at 7 p.m. in the University’s Campus Center. All are invited to attend this free event.
The trustees of the Higher Education Assistance Foundation (HEAF) have awarded a scholarship in the amount of $1,000 to Christopher Morley, a University of Maine at Presque Isle junior who is studying Business with a concentration in Accounting. Morley is a graduate of Thornton Academy.
