The University of Maine at Presque Isle will be offering two American Management Association courses this fall through its Employer U program beginning Tuesday, Sept. 29, and Wednesday, Sept. 30, respectively. The course registration deadline is Friday, Sept. 25.

Through the Employer U workforce development program, the University offers existing opportunities, such as the AMA certificate programs and the Young Professionals Institute, as well as customized personal and professional development opportunities.

The fall AMA courses, part of a multi-course curriculum leading to Certificates in Management and Human Resources Management, are specifically created to meet the unique needs of working professionals who want to be more effective in their current positions and better prepared for future advancement, according to Kim Jones, Director of UMPI’s Employer U.

By meeting in a classroom setting with other participants from many different organizations, students are able to see how other companies handle problems similar to their own. Instructors with extensive business experience and excellent teaching skills facilitate the courses.

The course Communication Skills for Managers will be held on Tuesdays from Sept. 29 to Nov. 3, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. in the Campus Center, Alumni Room. Participants will learn the critical communication skills needed for successful management at all levels and in all industries, including techniques to improve reading, writing, speaking, and listening proficiency. Jones, who is also a UMPI Assistant Professor of Business Management, will lead the course.

How to Manage Conflict in the Workplace is scheduled for Wednesdays from Sept. 30 through Nov. 4, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. in the Campus Center, Alumni Room. The course will equip participants with the strategies, tactics, and insights needed to gain control of tough conflict situations–and defuse them before they flare up. Ruth White, Regional Director of Early College for ME, will lead the course.

To earn an AMA certificate, each student is required to complete six courses for Management or five for Human Resources Management. Courses may be taken in any order and there is no time limit for completion of the program. Courses also can be offered on-site, Jones said.

Each course meets once a week for six weeks and one or more courses may be taken per term. The cost is $250 per course, and includes instruction, text and materials. Continuing Education Units are available for an additional charge. Participants are encouraged to register at this link: http://goo.gl/forms/3nQzyhGIAH.
