The University of Maine at Presque Isle will present the next screening in its Salmagundi Film Series, the independent film Neither Wolf Nor Dog, on Tuesday, Nov. 13 at 6 p.m. in the Auditorium in Wieden Hall. This 2016 film is directed by Steven Lewis Simpson and is based on the award-winning novel by author Kent Nerburn. All are invited to attend this free screening; the film is not rated, though it may be inappropriate for younger viewers.
The story follows a white author who gets pulled into the heart of contemporary Native American life by a 95-year-old Lakota elder. The film stars Dave Bald Eagle, Christopher Sweeney, and Richard Ray Whitman. It begins with Kent Nerburn (played by Sweeney)—a good-hearted, white American family man and writer—receiving a mysterious call from a distant Indian reservation. Despite his doubt, Kent travels to the high plains of the Dakotas. As he spends time with his three hosts, Kent’s understanding of the world is turned upside down.
This will be the first screening of Neither Wolf Nor Dog in Northern Maine. The film is 110 minutes long and has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 95%.
Established at the start of the Fall 2018 semester, UMPI’s Salmagundi Film Series focuses on a new film each month followed by a conversation about the subject matter. The series is held on the second Tuesday of the month and was created to show a wide range of films and to provide an opportunity for people to discuss their thoughts on the film. Loosely translated, Salmagundi means “a little bit of everything” and it was the name of UMPI’s school newspaper back in 1909. The next film series screening, Eddie the Eagle, will be held on Dec. 11.
