UMPI to celebrate Career Clothing Closet and Career Readiness Day

posted in: Press Releases

In an effort to provide students with the resources they need to best prepare for life after college, the University of Maine at Presque Isle will host a Career Readiness Day in conjunction with spotlighting the Career Clothing Closet on Tuesday, Oct. 29 from 12 to 2 p.m. in the Owl’s Nest. All are welcomed to attend the event, which is hosted by the Student Government Association, the Student Activities Office, the Career Readiness Office, UCU, and the Campus Store.

Located in the Campus Store, the Career Clothing Closet is designed for students who are in need of professional attire. Staff will be on hand to help students as they select items and prepare for their days after UMPI. The Career Clothing Closet provides a helpful option for students to acquire professional wear, as many college students haven’t developed this aspect of their wardrobes yet. The clothes from the closet are free, although students can donate money to the closet if they wish to do so. The closet is an excellent option for students who may not be able to afford such clothing.

A special aspect of the Career Clothing Closet is that staff will be available if a student needs help with putting an outfit together. Clothing, shoes, accessories, and many other items—all of which have been donated—can be put together to create a professional outfit.

The Career Clothing Closet has been open since Oct. 23 of last year. Event organizers hope that the closet will be a way to better prepare students for their careers after college. The closet also helps students become more aware of what should be worn to an interview or any professional event.

Spotlighting the Career Clothing Closet is just one aspect of this fall’s Career Readiness Day. Organizers plan to provide students with the opportunity to get professional photos taken, cover letters and resumes reviewed, and take part in mock interviews prior to graduation. Employers have been invited to offer career advice, network, review resumes and letters, provide short mock interviews, and give feedback to students.

With the combination of the Career Clothing Closet activities and the Career Readiness Day, students will have the opportunity to take advantage of a number of resources all at one time.
