Most do not require students to show financial need. Additionally, there are scholarship opportunities, such as the Worthington Scholarship Program available regionally, that incoming students may want to explore. Learn more below.

Merit Awards
The University of Maine at Presque Isle understands that earning a degree is a very valuable endeavor and we are committed to offering you opportunities to offset the costs through our Student Academic Scholarship Program. You will be rewarded for your hard work in academic areas. The awards below are geared toward traditional students coming right out of high school, and students transferring from other colleges and universities. These scholarships are awarded at the time of acceptance.
The following levels apply to all students—in-state, out-of-state, Canadian and other international students.
$5000 – Traditional Students (2 Ways to qualify)
Students must score 1100+ on the SAT between Evidenced-Based Reading & Writing and Math (25 ACT) with a minimum high school GPA of 3.3 OR an overall GPA of 3.7. Canadian students must have an academic average of 90 or above.

$2000 – Transfer Students
Students must transfer directly from another institution with a minimum 3.0 GPA and 15 transferable credit hours to UMPI.

Freshman Foundation Scholarships
Allen Scholarship
This scholarship is given to a high school graduate from the Caribou area, who will be a full-time student. The Allen Scholarship was named for Ralph W. Allen, a Caribou native who was active in business and civic affairs and served in the State Legislature.
Baker Scholarship
This scholarship is given to students from Aroostook County with a preference for those from Presque Isle. Recipients must be registered full-time. The Baker Scholarship was established in 1994 in memory of Dorothy and Gordon Baker.
Christie Scholarship
The Christie Scholarship is given to Aroostook County students who have demonstrated leadership qualities and have a good academic record. The scholarship was named for P. Arnold Christie, a long-time resident of Aroostook County.
Corey Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to a “fairly recent graduate of Caribou High School.” The recipient must demonstrate high academic achievement and promise. The scholarship was named for George T. Corey, a long-time resident of Caribou.
Doughty Scholarship
The Doughty scholarship is awarded to a full-time student pursuing a degree in teaching or nursing, funded through the generosity of alumnus Robert S. Doughty, Jr. The student must be from Aroostook County and demonstrate financial need.
Flewelling Lamoreau Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to a deserving student from Aroostook County with a good work ethic, high moral characteristics and ethical standards, and one who promises high academic achievement and will contribute to college life and society. It was established in memory of Florence Flewelling Lamoreau by her family.
Frank W. Hussey Scholarship
The Hussey Scholarship is awarded to a full-time, “all-around” student from Aroostook County who shows academic promise. The scholarship was established by the family in 1995.
Maine Potato Growers Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded annually to a full-time student. The recipient must show scholastic achievement, demonstrate financial need, and be a resident of Maine. Preference is given to candidates who completed high school in areas serviced by MPG, Inc.
Maine Public Service Company Scholarship
The MPS Scholarship is awarded to a full-time Aroostook County resident with preference given to a student pursuing a vocation useful in a career with Maine Public Service Company.
Freda C. Mitchell Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to a full-time student who shows academic promise and has financial need. Consideration is given to married, non-traditional students. The scholarship was established in memory of Freda Mitchell, former Director of Financial Aid at UMPI.
George & Clara Fenlason Morris Scholarship
The George and Clara Fenlason Morris Scholarship is awarded to high school graduates who reside in Limestone or Caswell Plantation at the time of their high school graduation, who demonstrate financial need, scholastic ability, character, leadership, and service to the school and community. Morris Scholarships may also be awarded to faculty/staff of the Limestone School System and graduates of Fort Fairfield Middle High School, using the same considerations.
Charles A. Nutter Scholarship
The Nutter Scholarship is awarded to students from the Mars Hill area. It was created in 1984 by members of the Mars Hill Rotary Club in memory of Charles A. Nutter.
Paris Snow Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to high school graduates, preferably from Aroostook County, who show interest in environmental-related studies, political science, or public management.
Presque Isle Rotary Scholarship
Awarded to a student from Aroostook County who exemplifies an ethic of community service.
Ruby Ashby Snowman Memorial Scholarship
The Snowman Scholarship is awarded to a full-time student from the State of Maine majoring in education.
Other Types of Financial Aid Awards
Adult Degree Completion Scholarship Fund
This scholarship has been created by the University of Maine System to assist Maine adult learners in completing their academic studies. These scholarships are for adult students returning to college after an absence of three years or more who are completing their first baccalaureate degree. A continuing scholarship, recipients may be eligible for as much as $4,000 per year for up to four years. Click here to learn more.
Native American Waiver and Educational Program
Waivers covering tuition and fees are available for eligible members of the Passamaquoddy and Penobscot Tribes and other persons who have resided in Maine for at least one year and who have at least one parent or grandparent on the census of a North American Indian tribe or who hold a band number of the Micmac or Maliseet Tribes. In addition, room and board charges are subsidized for those eligible students residing in residence facilities. Native American Waiver and Educational Program funds, when combined with other forms of assistance, cannot exceed total costs of education. Inquiries should be directed to your professional advisor—the Advising Center is located in South Hall.
War Orphan and Widow Tuition Waivers
Tuition may be waived for persons qualifying under subchapter 37-A MRSA, Section 50-J to 50-M.
Tuition Waivers for Children of Fire Fighters and Law Enforcement Officers Killed in the Line of Duty
Tuition waivers are available for children of fire fighters or law enforcement officers who have been killed or who have received an injury during the performance of duties which results in death.
Public Benefit Programs
The University of Maine at Presque Isle is approved by the Veterans Administration, the Social Security Administration, the Maine Rehabilitation Commission, and other public agencies for educational benefits under a variety of programs.
University Work Program
A limited number of jobs are available on campus for students who are not eligible for financial assistance.
Worthington Scholarship Foundation
The Worthington Scholarship Foundation is committed to making a college education affordable for students in Maine by awarding scholarships to graduates of Maine public high schools who will be attending participating Maine colleges. Awards are based on financial need and merit and are renewable for up to eight semesters. ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIP
A scholarship awarded annually by the Alumni Association of the University of Maine at Presque Isle. The applicant must be the son, daughter, grandchild, spouse, or stepchild of an alumnus of the University of Maine at Presque Isle. Any full-time second semester Freshman, Sophomore or Junior with an accumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better in any major may apply for this Alumni Scholarship.
JOHN ANDERSON SCHOLARSHIP
Awarded to a full-time student who is majoring in Secondary Education. Student must be a Junior or higher. Preference will be given to Canadian students.
ALAN ARMAN SCHOLARSHIP
Awarded to a full-time student in good standing, who is residing in one of the University’s residence halls. Student must be involved in a campus activity.
ARTHURETTA KIERSTEAD/THEORA BARTLEY SCHOLARSHIP
Awarded to an undergraduate Junior or Sophomore student, preferably a female, and resident of Maine. The recipient shall be majoring in Elementary or Physical Education and shall be in good standing and have a demonstrated ability in the arts.
RICHARD AYRE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 2015 as a lasting memorial to Dr. Richard “Dick” Ayre, Professor of Criminal Justice and Sociology at UMPI. This scholarship will be used for students who are majoring in Criminal Justice who are full time students majoring in Criminal Justice, and seeking their first undergraduate degree.
DICK AYRE SECOND CHANCE SCHOLARSHIP AND MENTORING PROGRAM
Established in 2015 as a lasting memorial to Dr. Richard “Dick” Ayre, Professor of Criminal Justice and Sociology at UMPI. This scholarship was established to assist students who are at-risk, in need, and seeking a second chance at their college education. Students must be enrolled part time or full time seeking their first undergraduate degree.
RICHARD AYRE SOCIAL ACTIVISM SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 2015 as a lasting memorial to Dr. Richard “Dick” Ayre, Professor of Criminal Justice and Sociology at UMPI, who dedicated his life to social activism. This scholarship is for students who are active in social justice causes and are full time seeking their first undergraduate degree.
THE BACHELOR OF SOCIAL WORK SCHOLARSHIP FUND
This scholarship is for Bachelor of Social Work majors from either the United States or Canada with a minimum GPA 2.5. The recipient must be accepted into the BSW Program (completed interview), enrolled in 9 credit hours of BSW course work, and have completed at least one semester of field work at UMPI.
MERRILL (MIKE) BULL SCHOLARSHIP
Applicants shall be full-time, third-year Business majors from Aroostook County, who have maintained at least a 2.5 average during their first two years of study. Recipient must demonstrate significant promise to meet his or her lifetime goals.
PAT COLLINS ART SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship is awarded to a student who is an Art Major and will be selected based on merit.
JERRY AND MABEL DESMOND EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship fund will support Education Majors in good academic standing at UMPI. Preference will be given to students from the State of Maine.
NELLIE T. DUNNING SCHOLARSHIP
Awarded to an Elementary Education major who exhibits promise. Recipient must be a female from Aroostook County and at least a Sophomore.
JOHNSTON ESTABROOK FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP FUND
Established in 2014 by the family, this scholarship is preferably awarded to working parents who have dependent children currently living at home.
DAVID G. & FRANCES LUNT FLEWELLING SCHOLARSHIP
Awarded to a matriculating student in a four-year program who has earned 30 credit hours or more, with at least 15 credits earned on the UM-Presque Isle campus. Also, has to be a graduate of a Maine high school and have been a resident of Maine for at least 2 years . Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.8.
RAYNOLD & SANDRA GAUVIN FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was established by the Gauvin Family in 2003. Preference will be given to students from Aroostook County who are registered for classes at the UM-Presque Isle and preferably awarded to a non-traditional student.
FORBES GEOLOGY SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship has been established in honor of Dr. William Forbes, former Professor of Geology at UM-Presque Isle.
CAROLINE GENTILE SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship has been established under the Foundation of the University of Presque Isle by the Alumni Association in honor of a long-time faculty member, Professor Caroline Gentile. Student applicants must be in the field of Health, Physical Education, Recreation or Elementary Education. Only Juniors or Seniors are eligible and must have a GPA of 3.5 or better.
MONICA G. GILBERT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Students must be a BFA (Bachelor’s of Fine Arts) major, have an accumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, and show involvement in campus and/or community organizations.
JERE GREEN LIBRARY STAFF SCHOLARSHIP
Applicants must be full-time degree-seeking students who have worked more than 30 weeks as a work study student in the UMPI library.
WILLIAM V. HASKELL SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship is awarded annually to a Recreation Major who shows academic promise and who resides in Presque Isle, a community in Aroostook County, or a community in the State of Maine. Students must demonstrate academic potential and a willingness to be involved in the community or University activities.
EDNA L. HIGGINS FUND
The Edna L. Higgins Fund is used to provide scholarships and financial aid for students at the several campuses of the University of Maine with preference given to students from the Greater Portland area. Established in 1974 under the will of the late Edna L. Higgins of Portland, Maine, the fund will be endowed and the income distributed annually by System Wide Services of the University of Maine.
WARREN H. HORTON SCHOLARSHIP
This award goes to an upperclassman in the international studies or social sciences area who has a GPA of at least a 2.8.
HOULTON CENTER SCHOLARSHIP
Awarded to a Maine resident living in Southern Aroostook County and attending the Houlton Center as a matriculated student. Recipients must demonstrate financial need.
MEL AND PHYLLIS HOVEY SCHOLARSHIP FUND
Funds are to support undergraduate education, must have an interest in a college education, potential for making a contribution to college life, a major field of study provided by the University of Maine at Presque Isle, society, and indication of a high moral character. Preference will be given to students from Aroostook County.
INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS SCHOLARSHIP
Applicant must be a current international student taking classes on the UMPI campus; this scholarship cannot be awarded to an online student. Applicant must demonstrate academic promise with a 3.0 GPA and the student must be committed to completing a degree at UMPI. Strong preference will be given to students who are leaders on campus and who are involved with at least one club, team, or organization.
JENKINS/ROBERTS/VLASAK SCHOLARSHIP FUND
Students who are residents of Fort Fairfield or Easton and/or majoring in Elementary or Secondary Education are considered for these scholarships.
JOHN N. LAGERSTROM MEMORIAL FARM CREDIT SCHOLARSHIP
Applicants shall be enrolled in at least their second semester at a University of Maine campus. The parents or grandparents of the recipients must be Farm Credit, current or former, stockholders. The parents of the recipients may also be employees/retired employees of Farm Credit of Maine. The scholarship shall go to a student with significant promise to meet his/her lifetime goals. Financial need is not a requirement.
MATHEMATICS-SCIENCE ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT SCHOLARSHIP
To qualify for this award, a student must be highly motivated and must be enrolled in a Mathematics-Science division major program leading to an Associate or Baccalaureate degree.
THE PETER G. MCCONNELL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Must be full time, upperclass students who are in good academic standing and who are majoring in Business and/or Accounting. Preference will be given to students from Aroostook County.
THE SMITH C. AND CHARLENE McINTIRE SCHOLARSHIP
Must be a graduate of a Maine secondary school or resident of the State of Maine for two years prior to applying and have earned a minimum of 30 hours of credit on the Presque Isle campus. Applicants must have a demonstrated need and an accumulative GPA of at least 2.8 and shall be recognized for moral character and a desire to contribute to society.
SYLVIA T. MCKENNEY SCHOLARSHIP
Applicants must be an Education Major (Secondary or Elementary), enrolled full time, seeking their first undergraduate bachelor’s degree, have good academic achievement, good character, and community service.

T. W. MORRISON SCHOLARSHIP
Any student attending the University of Maine at Presque Isle is eligible to receive this award providing the following criteria are met: grade point average of 3.3 or higher; enrollment in a 2 or 4 year degree program, carrying 12 credit hours or more; demonstration of financial need and leadership skills in campus organizations; and involvement in campus/community activities.
MALCOLM E. & CECILIA GAGNON MURPHY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND
Scholarship will be awarded to a Senior Fine Arts major who is enrolled full time, from Aroostook County with a 2.5 or higher GPA. Good citizenship, good sportsmanship, and good moral conduct will also be factors in determining the scholarship recipient.
MPG-HARLEY D. WELCH SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship is awarded to a student from Aroostook County who shows promise of benefiting from a college education or who has achieved an outstanding academic record while attending the University. Applicants must demonstrate leadership and financial need.
CHARLES A. NUTTER SCHOLARSHIP
The Charles A. Nutter Scholarship was established in 1984 by the members of the Mars Hill Rotary Club to provide assistance to the University of Maine at Presque Isle students from the mars Hill area that show academic promise.
GEORGE M. PARK MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND
The Park awards are used for the promotion of scholarship aid. Selection criteria includes: academic achievement, good character and financial need. Academic achievement should include the ability and potential of the individual to continue his/her education beyond the baccalaureate level. There are no restrictions on students home location, whether in-state or out-of state.
RUEL PARKS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Scholarship will be awarded to a Sophomore or Junior in the Physical Education or Athletic Training Program. Preference will be given to students who demonstrate past or present involvement in the physical education of children, such as coaching a recreational or school sports team and involvement in sports camps or summer camps.
KENNETH C. PETRESS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Scholarship will be awarded to a student at the University of Maine at Presque Isle who is enrolled as an English/Humanities undergraduate student in good academic standing studying in the field of Professional Communications.
THE PRESQUE ISLE GARDEN CLUB ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP
Eligible students shall have completed the equivalent of at least two semesters of full-time study. Students majoring in Environmental Science are eligible. Financial need will be considered but greater importance shall be placed on the scholarship, determination and integrity of the individual.
DAVID J. REYNOLDS SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship is awarded to an upper-class level, full-time student at the University of Maine at Presque Isle, who has completed 30+ credits and who is majoring in Environmental Science and Sustainability.
DANIEL SCHMIDT SCHOLARSHIP
Applicants for the Dr. Daniel Fredric Schmidt Memorial Scholarship grant shall be any student whose chosen major or minor academic studies are in the field of Behavioral Science. Grants will not be made to an entering Freshman student. Applicant must have achieved an academic average of 3.0 or better during his or her prior academic year.
ALICE AND HAZEN STETSON SCHOLARSHIP FUND
This scholarship is awarded to a deserving student from Aroostook County who has completed at least one year of a degree program at UMPI. The student must furnish proof of having lived in Aroostook County for at least three years prior to enrolling at the University.
STUDENT SENATE SCHOLARSHIP
Any student at the University of Maine at Presque Isle is eligible for this award. The applicants should have an accumulative grade point average of 3.2 or better and should be an active participant in campus and/or community life. The amount of the scholarship will be credited to the recipient’s account at the University of Maine at Presque Isle for the fall semester.
LARRY & AUDREY THIBODEAU SCHOLARSHIP FUND
Awarded to graduates of a high school in the Central Aroostook area primarily and Aroostook County, who are majoring in a medical related field.
TIMOTHY TOWNSEND MEMORIAL FUND
Income from this fund will be used to make an annual award or awards for scholarships, student travel, books, equipment for student research and other purposes which will enhance the geology learning experience at the University of Maine at Presque Isle.
THE WATSON FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP FUND
The annual scholarship is intended to support an undergraduate student in good academic standing. Applicants must demonstrate financial need and who are registered for classes at UMPI. A strong preference will be given to students from Aroostook County.
CLIFFORD O.T. & MARGUERITE HILL WIEDEN SCHOLARSHIP
This award is presented annually to a student at UMPI who shows academic achievement, high moral character, possesses mature judgment and exceptional promise for future achievement. Financial need is not a prime consideration.
HUMANITIES SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship is awarded to a student pursuing a four-year degree in one of the following areas: Art, English, Communication, Language, and Philosophy. The recipient must have a GPA of at least 3.25.
WYSOCKI INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS SCHOLARSHIP
This award will be made to a person pursuing an interest in international business. The award may be used for field trips, equipment, books, scholarships, and other activities, services, or materials which would enhance the undergraduate learning experience in international business.
DONALD & LINDA ZILLMAN SCHOLARSHIP
Established in May 2012 as a lasting testament in honor of former UMPI President Don’s and Linda’s contributions to the campus and the community, this scholarship was created as a surprise announcement at his departing ceremony, with gifts from friends, alumni, faculty and staff. This scholarship is for students who are enrolled full-time, seeking their first undergraduate degree, and shall have at least a “B” average or better; all majors are eligible to apply.
