Application Requirements

We have designed our application process to be as straight-forward and simple as possible.  Please use the steps below to help guide you through the process:

First-Time Students

Provide official high school transcript or GED and a letter of recommendation from either a teacher or school counselor.

Transfer Students

Provide official transcripts from all colleges and universities you’ve attended. (If you do not have 60 earned and transferable credits, you must also provide your high school transcripts.)

YourPace Students – 1 simple step:

• For Bachelor’s degree programs, YourPace and choose Apply Now.

Once you have submitted your completed application, we may request additional materials such as an essay or request that you come to an interview.

YourPace International Students

YourPace program allows international students to study 100% online from outside the US. To apply to a YourPace Program applicants will need to complete the application instructions for a YourPace Student below.

International Students

All non-YourPace international students apply via the steps outlined below. 

Step 1: Complete the Apply Maine or Common App

• Create an account.
• Answer all questions 
• Select UMPI 
• Submit application

Step 2: Submit Transcripts for Credential Evaluations

At UMPI, we require all international applicants to submit a credential evaluation report for high school and university transcripts because we do not do evaluations in-house. (There are a few exceptions; please see below for details.) There is a fee for this process that can range from around $85 to over $275 (if you have transfer credit). This evaluation report will translate your grades into US equivalencies.

We highly recommend you use one of the following for your credential evaluation:

If you are planning on using another provider, they must be endorsed by the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES). 

Note: If you are using WES and are from the Caribbean, CXC results need to be sent directly to WES from CXC (cxc.org)

What evaluation should I order?

• Document-by-document evaluation: students with only a high school transcript
• Course-by-course evaluation: students with a high school transcript AND advanced level work; advanced level work could include A-levels, CXC’s, CAPE exams, etc.
• Course-by-course evaluation: students with college/university work completed outside of the United States.

Exceptions:

• High School Transcripts from China and English Speaking Provinces of Canada do not need to be evaluated. Transcripts must be sent to umpi-admissions@maine.edu directly from the school. 

Step 3: English Language Proficiency

All international students are required to show proof of English language proficiency. There are several ways an international student can do this.

Option 1: Native English Speaker

If you are from one of the following countries, where English is considered a primary language, you will be considered proficient.  If you are from one of these countries, you MUST submit a copy of your passport as proof.

Option 2: Proficiency Through Testing

• TOEFL score of 79 Internet based & 550 paper based
• IELTS score of 6.5
• Pearson Test of English Score of 53
• Duolingo English Test score of 105

You may have your official scores sent to umpi-admissions@maine.edu directly from your school counselor or order a copy to be sent officially from the CollegeBoard or TOEFL/IELTS website.

Option 3: Proficiency Through Instruction In English

Meet either requirement:

• Your high school transcript clearly states that English is the language of instruction for all subjects. If studying in a 13-year system, academic records for grades 10–13 are required.
• You have successfully passed an English Composition course at a US higher education institution with a grade of C or better.

International Applicants Not In F-1 Status Only:

If you wish to attend UMPI in a visa/status category other than F-1, you should confirm with your immigration advisor that your current status permits you to 1) study and 2) if in a program that contains off campus internship, clinicals, field experience, etc that you have legal authorization to participate in those forms of employment with your current status. 

F-1 Applicants Only:

If you wish to attend UMPI in person with a F-1 Visa, please keep these deadlines in mind. If you are unable to meet these deadlines, you should contact admissions to request to defer to a later start term,

• Submitted their Request an I-20 Form, Financial Affidavit Form, and attached relevant required documentation.

Teacher Certification – 3 simple steps:

1. Submit the UMaine System Application.
2. Provide official copies of transcripts from all colleges and universities attended.
3. Send 2 letters of recommendation.
